Greg Brown's Precision Motorwerks has the best replacement alternator on the planet.

AL170X is the Bosch part you're looking for if it is the one in the picture you posted.

Looks correct for an ‘85 which is the bracket shown, the ‘84 was a different one for the same M28/22 engine. They are for sale on RosePassion in Europe for 1,200 Euro. Worth looking for a rebuilt one or alternative unless you won the lottery.

For that kind of money, you can have a much better alternator with the shipping and duties from the states buying either the Greg Brown or 928 Motorsports one. I have the 928MS 200 Amp version.

When Barry is building a 928 rally car, I think he likes a small lightweight generator, 60 Amp should do. If you are prepared to modify the brackets and other things there are many small generators priced next to nothing around. A good used one from the scrap yard is an alternative. I have a Volvo generator on my BMW 635 CSI.

yes, i have seen silly prices above 1000 euro.... haha
This one looks the right type : https://www.benl.ebay.be/itm/Porsche...EAAOSws8NdJGkq
Will first see further here local .

When i was building the car in 2008 i bought a super light weight McLaren alternator from a member here.... but lost it with the engine ….

For rally we do need some amp's…. in "Historic" we may not use LED , so we have the classic lights… here you see on my BMW all together 700 Watt … that is already 60 amp's !

Here it was allowed once so we used the LED's … amazing how they light up the road. Much better than my 4 Hella's. And you don't even have to aim them good…. almost daylight

"think" i solved my problem…….. indeed parts store can't find them or very, very expensive….. so i went to a local specialist in alternators/starter motors.... he found the same results ( 900 euro ) … but phoned me today : this is the same Bosch alternator as used in the Opel Omega ( don't know if those were sold in the USA ?? ) but only in the 90 Amp version.
He had one rebuild , i bought it for 200 €.

Now 90 Amp is enough for the rally car , we don't have lux consumers. Only the in total 600 Watt lights ( 50 Amps ) , but when we need those during rally in the dark , we are always between 3500 and 6500 rpm. , so the alternator can pump that . ( + 2 fuel pumps and eventually a small cabin heater , i installed one from a forklift , only to heat the front windshield )
