Default Introduction

Hello Everyone!

I'm driving a 1986.5(I believe it is based on the exhaust layout and a few other indicators mention here and other places) 928S this summer (maybe longer) that is my Father-In-Laws (who is sick) and has been sitting in a barn for the past 3+ years. He wanted to get it up and running so recently invested to get it back on the road . . . . and to fix some electrical issues that mice created over the duration that it has been sitting. Runs well, auto, but could use some more work moving forward. For now, we are going to enjoy it this summer. I also have a Mach 1 that is my toy. Anyway . . . . Rennlist has been a valuable forum and appreciate all the knowledge available.

It has a black hood (no idea why) and staggered GT(?) wheels with tan interior.

Hello Evil_Capri!
Welcome!

Sweet S3. Drive it and have a marvelous time. Spend whatever is necessary to make it reliable.
Nice Mach 1. I have a soft spot for that gen of Mustang. However, I see you say it is YOUR toy. Don't discount this 928. Don't compare the two cars to each other. Each is wicked in their own right. Enjoy them both!

If you haven't yet, please read the 'New Visitors' sticky note thread at the top of the forum page.

Good Luck!

Easiest way to tell if 86.5 is look at the last 4 digits of the VIN. If over 1000 then it is 86.5
(You could look for the S4 brakes, but those could have been upgraded. Just like your wheels and hood!)

Look at the drain plug on the underside of the differential. To my knowledge, that is 86.5 only and 87+.
Earlier cars had the drain plug in the bottom of the differential cover.
Underside drain plug location is due to routing of dual exhaust pipes.
Which this one has.
Agreed that VIN is best way for verification. On this 928, circumstantial evidence is pointing to 86.5.

Easiest way to identify an 86.5 is the square jack point that extends below the body line in front of the rear tire. You can ID one from across the parking lot with no additional info necessary.

Yep, and I think you can see them, at least the front one, in the first pic.

Welcome to the 928 forum The 928 might feel like a tank (partially because of the heavier steering feel), but according to the web the 86.5 928 weighs approx 100lbs less than that gen Mach 1. T

Thanks Tony! Indeed about the weight, though I have taken about 65lbs off of the Mustang between rear seat delete, lighter wheels, and a few other tricks! I meant (and should have clarified) that the 928, is built so much better that it feels more like a little tank!

Evil_Capri, get this 928 to a reliable standard you are comfortable with. Then, take it out and get it up to, ahem, um...triple digit speeds. You will see what we are talking about.

Update . . .

Been loving driving the 928 this Summer (when not too hot, as there is no A/C currently). Car seems to be getting stronger each time I drive it. (Remember, it had not been driven in 3+ years.) Getting some nice 1-2 chirps on some lively take-offs from a standing start.
