Rear suspension - identifying Left from Right for reassembly
Morning All
Just trying to organise parts for reassembly of my 1985 S2 rear suspension following complete overhaul and hoping someone can help confirm L/R of a couple of bits;
FIRSTLY: Lower arm - when placed on a flat surface, the lower arm has a slightly upward facing "V" shape?
SECONDLY: Rear shocks - I see they have an offset. On WSM 4, page 42-14, note 3 it look as if they "lean" to the rear of the car although the perspective on the image is a little ambiguous. Am I interpreting that correctly?
Thanks all and happy spannering
David

Please post pictures of the parts you want identified laying next to each other
the lower shock mount is canted the pin will easily fit one way and have to be forced the wrong way
Note sometimes a white dot of paint is on the part of the shock body that should face to the rear,
otherwise the WSM picture should assist you here
C531XHO, I am right now working on the control arms for the Red Witch and have run into the same question. I am swapping the good Weissach bushings from the bent control arms into the good control arms. Luckily I marked the arms before I took everything apart.
The rear lower control arms do have an upward V when laid flat on a work bench.
Gimme a bit to get out to my shop for some photos...
Seth I was under the impression that once you press out the Weissach bushing it will be destroyed and a new bushing will need to be installed.
To be clear what bushing are you working on?
FWIW I would leave the #12 bushing alone as it is not a bushing thats diagnosed as being bad.
EDIT I have never replaced one of these #12 bushing,
I did replace the link pin bushings #11 once and probably should have left them alone. They are hard to remove the replace
The more common bushing to replace is the #10 bushing and the two dog bone bushings
Thank you, worf!
Yep, I am hoping the photos of the control arms will help C531XHO in identifying the ones on his S2.
Perfect thanks Seth, that has confirmed what I thought was right. When I took them off for blast and paint (all bushes good and not wanting heat of powder coating) I stupidly thought they were the same.
