Unhappy Loose Mirror

The pass side mirror is loose on my wife's driver. '88 S4 A/T. I am wondering if I have to disasemble the inside of the door to fix it, or can I fix it from the top/outside. It is not the glass that's loose, but the housing, where it swivels on the door mount. Any help / advice is appreciated. Thanks in advance.

I had this issue too.... swing the mirror aside(gently... watch the paint) and you should see an allen screw. Tighten it.

Thanks for the input guys. Much appreciated.

Sharkskin, the allen screw you are talking about has no effect on my situation. Isn't that screw what holds the base onto the door? That part is not loose, it is the mirror housing, the flag part, that is loose.

Anyone else btdt?

Thanks,

JF

Joe F,

If you have a gimp mirror like mine that is loose the next part to check is the spring loaded bolt that hold the mirror to the holder. To check this take off the allen bolt as described above.

Then you'll see a large bizarre spring device. This is most likely the part that came loose. There aren't too many parts that can go wrong so its most likely this part. I have the same problem with mine.

This spring you push and turn with thumb or something. I haven't quite figured it out yet but look for this.

Default Re: Loose Mirror

That was the first problem I tackled on the first 928 I owned. Very simple fix.

See: http://www.nichols.nu/tip444.htm

Nearly 5 years later, I still have the 928 I did the repair on, and the mirror is still tight.

The nichols site and 951motorsports.com both look very helpful. I will get on it this weekend. Nice to know I don't have to take the door apart.

Thanks for the help guys.
