Ok, I know its the production number, but is there any significance to it being nine hundred and twenty eight?

I also know 944 turbo = 951, 911 turbo 930 etc..
do the 928GT and 928GTS have different production numbers?

9=Porsche numbering system since the 901/911
2=Next generation of cars after the 911
8=8 cylinders

After that they became less religious about assigning numbers.

I agree with Nicole except.

9 is the number system to say its a Porsche
2 is how many people the car can haul around
8 is how many times the normal price your going to pay to own and maintain it.

Neighter explains the 930, or the 911.

Or the 951.

Or the 944.

My explination is that it's a number, chosen mostly at random, to identify the projects. Porsche, if they're the car company that I think they are, should have loughts of design studys, most of which shouldn't even make it to the drawing board. And each project gets a number. Probably not exactly sequincly, but what ever number is avalible.

Thus you end up with a very odd numbering system.

Viribus:

If you read the whole post of mine, you might remember that I said they became less religious about assigning the numbers after the 928 was introduced. They had to differentiate the 944 somehow from the 924, so they had to come up with a number that would make sense and sell cars. 951 was probably more arbitrary, because they did not intend to market the car under that name. 968 was probably chosen to buld a bridge to the 928 and its look and feel.

The 911 was initially called 901 - only because Peugeot already had some protection on numbers with a "0". they changed it to 911. That was the first generation of the "9xx" cars. The development of the 930 - to the best of my knowledge - started later than the development of 924 and 928. I could be wrong, but that makes the most sense to me...

9 is obvious. The rest is probably more random than anything else given that no other Porsche number makes any sense at all.

Except perhaps the last 911 which was really a 993, the current 911 which is really called 996 soon to be 997 and then 998 which seems a pretty straigtforward sequence (WTF happened to 994 and 995 - reserved for future air-cooled cars? ). Obviously someone at Porsche do not belive they'll be around for many more years - at the current rate they'll run out of numbers before 2010 .

No, seriously, I firmly believe someone at Porsche is getting a kick out of coming up with new numbers that appear to follow a pattern but really don't, and then watch the rest of the world hopelessly trying to come up with a good explanation. I tell you, they're laughing their butts off right now.

What caused me to post this question was this thread in the general area:

Default Porsche model designations

I have read that Porsche at first used increasing project numbers, and used the same project number on the projects that became road cars. I believe that was true for the 356 and the 911 (that should have been called 901). I guess Porsche didn't want to have number designations over 2000 and started to make up number in the 9xx series.

It refer's to the minimum amount of money you will spend when having your car serviced at the dealer, $928.00.

But Nicole, you system doesn't hold for the 911 or the 930.

According to your system it would go like this

9 = Porsceh cars

1 = 1st generation

1 = 1 cylinder?

Or the 930

9 = Porsche cars

3 = 3rd generation?

0 = 0 cylingers?!?!?!?!?

And well all know that the 911 and the 930 were designed, and built before the 924/928s. So Porsche just made sence on the 924 and the 928, but doesn't follow the system for the 911, 930, 944, 968 and onward? (Bascily ever other car they've built.)

No sir, I don't buy that. I think they're being mostly random, in a werid engineering sort of order that makes sence if your Porsche, but makes no sence to the rest of the world.
