Does a Cayenne and the Carrera GT have a Number?

I'd heard that the Cayenne was 999. Being 955, that would mean that it was conceived before the 986 (Boxster) and 996 (911). I find this hard to believe since the Boxster was designed back in the mid-90s.

It's definitely 955:

Go on any Porsche dealer website that lists parts or Tequipment and part #s will start with 955.

The "official" (FWIW) model designation is 9PA AE1 (Cayenne S) and 9PA AF1 (Cayenne Turbo). There is no designation in Excellence Was Expected for the Cayenne (the V6 model). Mr. Ludvigsen also noted that the Carrera GT V-10 project number is 980 310. Porsche's PET lists the Cayenne as 9PA although the Cayenne's part numbers all start with 955. And I don't think that Porsche engineering project numbers are necessarily issued in sequence. (Can you say 993?) Check out "Appendix 2: Porsche Type Numbers" in Excellence Was Expected. Pages 1484-1489. (Cayenne and Carrera GT entries are the last ones on the list on page 1489.)

Guys,
Part number sequences and project engineering numbers do not always coincide.
The Cayenne is not a type 955. Part number series 955 means the parts are not designed nor made by Porsche. They provide the specs for the parts and they were designed and manufactured by somebody else. The 9X5 series of part numbers is the one normally allocated for such parts. This system was introduced with late sportomatic transmissions for the 911 and then automatic transmissions for the 928.
It gets very confusing sometimes. It is all engineering jargon.

The order guides for each type give a number - 955 for the Cayenne S V8, 999 for the Cayenne Turbo. I haven't seen it with my own eyes, but I was given a list with 980 prefixes for the Carrera GT.
It would be fascinating to have Porsche do some PR and put out a "once and for all" on their part numbering, prefixes and types.

I've also seen the CGT listed as the 980 - no official source though
That would be so cool - and would restore faith in a lot of enthusiasts.

The Carrera GT I oggled today has 980 prefixes on its part numbers. It also is known as the 980 (referenced that way during training classes in Atlanta apparently). Interesting thing about the C-GT is that it uses a number of parts from other lines....... including the starter from the Cayenne!

My dealer service rep confirms Toby's post: the "official" C number is 9PA but they consider 955 an accurate designator too. He also says us owners need to stop worrying about this stuff and just enjoy driving the damn things! In his words, "does anyone actually give a s*hit?"
