Hey, whats this final drive stuff??? I thought I got you all straight on that!!
(ie its not the final drive, its the gear spacing and unfortunately, the 928s are pretty stuck with the spacing they have.)

All I know is there are very few stock cars, even with equal mods to mine, that can keep up with a 928, let a lone for the same investment.

Hi. I went to the tread and all I see is a bunch of idiots with very closed minds. I like all Posche models. I have had them all 914 944 911 and 3 928s. The 914 was a fun little toy that handles like a slot car but I always thought a 4x4 was going to crush me some day. The 944 non turbo was a excellent car. Fun to drive but down a bit on power. Only problem I ever had with it was motor mounts. The 911 Targa was real looker but I think a solid roof car would be better. Plus it had dangerous at the limit handling that could bite you. I also was never very excited about the gas tank up front with the battery next to it. I would call them a death trap. I still loved it. My 928 is another story. Vault solid and heavy they give me the level of safety i like for freeway battles here in Montana plus I have always been a V8 person. But now that we have a speed limit it is a lot nicer to drive here. It was crazy before. I guess it boiles down to you like what you drive. I did drive a freinds water cooled 911 and It was awfull nice. Mike D

Hear in South / eastern PA all the 944 i see on the road are in good shape
the ones that aren't in good shape are in peoples rear yards soon to be parts cars, it just costs to much money to bring them back.

(entry level status + being common) - (high repair/ parts + low demand) =
parts car!

i don't see any 928s, the 911s i see are newer exec. leased cars

the 928 is the porsche road less traveled, and iam loven it.

You know it's kind of funny but Edmunds suggests a retail value of a 87 911 Targa at 10k in clean shape w/100k miles. As for a 87 928 w/100k miles - 13K in clean shape. Mind you the 911 targe is only 1 out of about 7 models for the 911 for the same MY.

Just food for thought.

Let me feed you with this. 87 targa = 205 rear wheel , without the cat, if you are LUCKY!!
87 928S4 = 292hp rear wheel with everything but a cat.

If you start finding 87 Carreras for $10K, call me! I'll buy them all! These cars are still selling for $20K+ so Edmunds might be a little out to lunch.

You cannot compare 911's and 928, they are different cars. If Porsche had marketed the 928 as a GT and not a replacdment for the 911, it would still be around today.

I own both, the 928's better on the autobahn, the 993's better on the twisting roads of Hong Kong. But neither is better than the other.

And what did you really expect from a bunch of 911 owners? They bought the car they liked best. You don't expect them to sit around wishing that they had bought a 928 or 944 instead, do you? That doesn't mean we have to get defensive about what we think. Like a few other people here I've owned a number of Porsches - a 924, 2 944s, a 911, and a 928. I happen to like the 928 best, which is why it's the one I still have. But if someone else likes the 911 better, why should that bother me?

My 911SC came from the factory as it is today. Fun Fun Fun. And it's a targa which means in addition to incredible sunny day driving, I also get to always garage her. No other choice, they leak badly. She needs to be driven regularly or she gets all sorts of gunk in her CIS.

My 944 and 944S (I no longer have) were excellent, reliable, diehard daily drivers, and when I took a friend for a prepurchase drive in my n/a 1983 944, he stepped out dizzily and said: "Man I wanted so badly to buy this car but it is WAY too much car for me". A real plus was the HUGE sunroof that was removable. Much like the targa. I've driven Turbos and they are all that and nearly S4 power. I can see how people could kill themselves very easily in a 951 with its sudden torque kick.

My Automatic S4 (the ex has it) is a stately equivalent to a Mercedes Sport. A real classic, with refinement and 12-way heated seats and whooshing silent torque, and leather everywhere. A real gentleman's supercar. Incidentally the 968 is very similar to this car, except that it has significantly less torque acrosss the entire rev range.

My 5-speed S4 with Ott-X, RMB and re-engineered European-style minimalistic interior is a torque monster that eats the road like an old Miura, and it sounds like one too. Nobody but NOBODY kicks my butt in that car. I'm in love.

All that said, I'll never give the 911 up, unless it's for another 911. And you'd have to pry the S4 out of my cold, dead fingers and vene then, be ready for a serious fight.

Agreed, old 944 and 924s are often driven by idiots who could not care less and never ever ever service them. The reason they are able to do that, is that a 944 or 924 driven like a passat will respond like a passat, and outlast it. Very reliable.

Try that with a 928 or 911, and you will have bent valves before you know it.

After hanging out here a few days and hearing how great the 928 is, I thought I might go slumming and buy one!

Oh yeah, it's spelled Carrera, not Carrara (sic)...
