All tow eyes are not equal
I recently learned ( the hard way ) that the tow eyes change somewhere around 1982? The thread design changed from corse to fine.

Yep. And it is some sort of odd ball pitch type as well. Here is a good thread on the differences.

Did it cross thread ? Gnarl threads under tension ?
Does it change more than once ? Was it your 86.5

Yesterday I was trying to get my 86.5 onto an auto carrier. Simple...screw in the tow hook and good to go. Not so fast buckwheat....I learned that early tow hooks have a more corse thread pattern...
Why am I hauling my car on a "hot shot" from the Bay Area to Orange you ask? Clutch was destroyed by an automotive journalist ( shall remain nameless). Now I can get it into all 6 gears ( reverse included ) engine running and the clutch out..cool, but it fails to proceed.

Not a big deal all in all. Just a logistical issue. The good news is that I'm not responsible for paying for it. Lesson learned that not all auto journalist know how to drive a manual and understand how cars work.

Auto trans is the best theft deterrent... wouldn't buy or steal one.
78-only, 15mm dia, fine thread
79-83, 15mm dia, coarse thread
84-95, 20mm dia, coarse thread
(same thread pitch for both coarse threads)
So things went from fine to coarse thread, then from small to larger diameter.
So what tow hook did you try to use?

PET says all years used 8TPI threads, going from 15mm OD 78-86, then 20mm OD. Interested to see a 'fine' threaded tow eye. I believe some 911s used a finer thread, but have never seen one. The 911 parts listing do not show thread size or pitch, where the 928 entires do.

Jaysus George, that's nuts! Wow! Van told me about that car and his 200 mph ride when he visited last year. Would love to go for a ride too

You'd need a set of full racing gear to get in the car for a ORR event. It's hard to get up to 200 mph on the street in California without getting thrown in jail... I've got a race in May and September if you're really interested in riding along. I'll be running 170 mph class in May in a two way 120 mile run, and 180 mph class in September in a one way 90 mile run. Bill plans on assisting, but has retired from the passenger seat. It'd help if you can see the race notes and the mile markers without difficulty plus do a little math in your head without a calculator.
