well sort of ,
you only need to remove the back two intake tubes,
then the upper T comes out,
then the lower throttle body assembly can be removed .

BUT,
its a lot easier to remove the all of the intake tubes

One of the design specs of the 928 was for Porsche to put every item that would would wear or fail as deep as possible, requiring as much disassembly as possible*. Part of the 928 Ownership experience. If you are working on any part of the car and you have not already removed the cross brace and intake tubes, you are probably doing it wrong.

*With certain exceptions like brake pads.

No, you still have to remove the cross brace and intake tubes to do the brake pads.

You guys really need to change a clutch on a 1986 944 Turbo (951) before complaining about ANY job on a 928....

All that effort four cylinders? No thank you

I changed the plugs on the 981 last weekend. So easy a blind man could do it. (Because having eyes doesn’t help a bit...)

Get requests for that frequently. My answer is always the same. Nope, do not want.

I have heard this before. All my above snarkiness aside, why is the 951 clutch such a PITA? And is it specifically the 951, or all 944/924/931 trans-axle platforms?

The 944 clutch job requires removing the TT (which means dropping the transaxle). And the exhaust.

On a turbo, there's more to the exhaust, and some early cars need the intake removed.
And the wastegate has to come off.

There's just a lot more to take off before you can get to it.

We are so spoiled with how easy the 928 clutch is.

Edit to add Clark's Garage writeup on it:

The clutch on a 944 is the reason the one I got my dad to buy is an auto. Even if it still has the same rubber vibration isolator that is prone to failure as a manual...

I read the write ups on how to do a 944 clutch. That is one job I would dread to do.
