Default Bilstein Rebuild service

1987 928 s4...with 70,000 miles and 17 , 18 years? on a set of Bilsteins that are part of the 928 intl Bilstein/Eibach package. I think i bought them new back in 20001....02? Mark?

anyhow..they were bought new.

Under the car today and notice the rear pax side is definitly leaking some fluid and the rubber "spacer."..or bump limiter is basically destroyed.

I am going to have all 4 rebuilt. Its time.

Has anyone done this and who is the go to place to have it done. Do you send them back to Bilstein? or is it done locally?

Recomendations..

Any ideas on cost?
I looked through my records and i dont have the invoice of the purchase if i need to prove that they were bought new by me. (Im sure Mark can dig it up).

Thanks.

I did this in June '17 and Bilstein told me that they no longer offer the rebuild service on older shocks. However, with a small amount of begging, and telling them that it was a special car and a special (original) restoration, they complied and rebuilt my original shocks from my '85 ROW. Sent them to their San Diego facility (bare shocks only, they will not disassemble/reassemble). A nice guy named Junior Africa helped me out and he got the approval for the rebuild from his manager Tony. Cost me 460 out the door for all four. They had to replace one of the shafts because it was scratched. Good luck

I have had 2 rears rebuilt here in Oz at the importer's works - 48k miles on them. There is a test listed in the WSM that the shock is OK, and when I did this on the 'fixed' shocks, one failed. When I took it back they muttered something about the rears being harder to work on due to the bottom eye not being at right angle to the body, but they managed to fix it on second try. No issues since. Economic to do on these, but on bilsteins on cheaper makes (Subaru) its not - refurb price is much too close to new price.
Test is listed at P43 of sect 40 in Chassis/heat manual - fully compressed there should be less than 35mm of main shaft exposed (29.5mm new).

I had mine rebuilt by Bilstein as well.

Cost me ~$460 as well and they didn't really question the age other than they were amazed they were gold bodied ones since they stopped making them years ago.

I told them what car they were off of and they didn't really put up a fight.

So far so good with them, but the car has been sitting a year so we'll see if they need to be redone again.

Those shocks are not supposed to have a lifetime warranty ??

Re Warranty, note exclusions on web page.....
WARRANTY RESTRICTIONS

The limited warranties set forth above do not cover normal wear and tear and are non-transferable. The following are warranty exclusions:
  • Original equipment shock absorbers (vehicle manufacturer warranty)
Re valving, my wrench recommended 'Monte Carlo' as appropriate for a 928. Not sure what the original spec might have been.
