Default Catalytic Converter Options in California for a 87 S4

I hear rattling from my cat so I think I need new ones. Besides it failed smog recently.
Have not done this before and I dont know where to go. Im also looking for a cost-effective solution.
Any suggestion especially from someone who has done this before? 1987 S4. Thanks and I appreciate it!

There are cats that will cost you about $300. They won't last forever but they will get you thru smog. I think Magnaflo makes one. I had one installed in my 80 at Muffler Works in Berkeley and it lasted for 8 years

Just curious, will I be able to install this myself without doing any welding?
Im attaching a pic of my cat. Excuse my ignorance here, so if I unscrew these bolts, that should separate them?
No cutting necessary? And the factory ones you have just bolts right in? TIA.

So it looks like you have a factory cat now and the fitting in the picture are slip fitting ( no welding) The other end has 2 flanges with 3 bolts each plus you need to disconnect the air pipe and 02 sensor but most people wold consider it a DIY job.

The factory pieces bolt straight in.

If you weld something in, you're _begging_ to have them check for an ARB number stamped on them.

What are your smog numbers today?

You think any smog guy will figure out that those are for '85/'86 and not '87 and later, by checking the part number?

It is California, after all!

Right you are. That's why this is extra challenging. So Im leaning towards no welding...
But Im glad you asked about my smog numbers today.
Because from the latest numbers, I think it could be the cats or I just need to drive the car more
so it will get rid of the extra amount of carbon deposited from the rich mixture before I did some changes.
I am attaching the recent and the first time results.

What I did to bring down the numbers:

- change spark plugs
- change wires
- change rotors
- change fuel filter
- change oxygen sensor
- clean MAF with CRC maf cleaner and area behind it which I saw had some carbon deposits.

But above still not enough apparently from the the recent failed smog numbers although difference from last is huge!
I was expecting it to pass actually after seeing no carbon deposits on the spark plugs after driving it about 100 miiles.
Although I said I heard some clanking noise which I think came from the cats but now it's gone after cleaning the MAF. So I could be wrong.
I measured the heat from the cats and difference is around 80 fahrenheit from before and after cats.

Will appreciate any thoughts you may have. Thanks!

(Edit)
Your before/after are backwards, I saw the GP result as your after by mistake.

When was the last complete fuel and vacuum system refresh?

Here is what -just- cats being bad looks like

Here is 'everything perfect' (Run above with a factory new cat)

But the recent smog with much improved results (with pink highlights) is close to the numbers of your bad cats result...so it could be the cats...or maybe leftover carbon deposits from the prior setup of running rich?

Yes, I have joined Norcal928 on FB and been waiting on a weekend wrench post. None so far.
But I am actually being helped by Mark W. but more recently I've been posting here as Mark is also on here.
Are you going to the GHM Cars and Coffee this weekend? I plan to be there.
