Default Took the 928 out today for the first time

Morning Gents,

I put the 928 on the road today @ DMV and decided to give her maiden voyage.

checked TP, AF, oil, and put some fresh gas in and headed out for my 25 mile drive to the office.

I've read a few other comparisons on here where people felt the car was underwhelming, but I must say that I could not be more impressed with this machine. It was compliant on the highway, no rattles or squeaks, AC worked well, and temp stayed between the fist two hash marks. The harder I pushed it, the better it was connected to the road. And thats not bad considering most of my suspension is 33 years old, and my tires are shot. I have a new set of contis coming from Tire Rack and am having the stock manholes powder coated gun metal grey. I have to get the car up on a rack, and will replace whatever is worn under there along with a fresh alignment shortly.

My other pcar is a modded 997TT, and this car is fun for completely different reasons.

The Euro engine sings above 3500K, and it real fun to keep up in the higher RPM's. On the highway, it's real easy to average 80 MPH as the car likes to cruise fast. Brakes arent bad, and I had no issues shedding off speed.

I'm still getting used to the dog-leg shift pattern, and find myself hunting for 3rd gear a lot however its cool to drive something different.

tons more to do, but it was so cool to drive one of my "heros" today.

Hey,

The Euro S Engine is amazing, I’ve had a lot of fun with mine.
Sounds better than the later 32V engines IMO.

Theres one tweak on the S2 engines if you plan to run it on premium 93 octane gas:
Near the ignition control unit (on the right in the passengers foot area behind the carpet flap), there’s a cable loop that is used to make the car run ok with lesser octane gas.
If it’s closed, it runs with tamer ignition timing required with the bad quality gas mostly available back then.
Open it up and it runs without restriction, giving you more punch in the 2500-4500 rpm range.

Best regards from Germany
Andreas

Thanks Andreas,

I found that loop and opened it up. It certainly likes the rev! What a sound!

Thanks for the tip.

Best,

Kurt

Kurt, same issue shifting when I switched to the GT from my S4. Quickly found that 1-2 just push toward your knee (to avoid a 1-4 shift). In the GT, reverse has a lock out so no chance of going 1-reverse. then 2-3 easy straight back. Once your are rolling, first gear never used again until a complete stop, so you basically have a H pattern 4 speed for cruising..enjoy, they are great cars!

Well...I was with you there for a minute but think I have another issue also.

Went out for lunch, and lost all gears. I was stuck in 4th I think. No hot rodding before that in terms of jamming gears. Pulled over to the side of the road and contemplated a tow.

I popped the shift boot off and could feel that the transmission was not engaging the rear rod. I pulled the front road back towards the rear of the car and got all gears back.

Looks like I need a new cup for the front piece. I'm gonna get that and some new bushings.

Don't know what your skill set is on the 928 but if you happen to get in over your head (as I do often) there's Pete RL: IIRC "elgreco" who has a shop in LI and Stan RL: "Mrmerlin" who's just north of Philly. Enjoy your new ride....she's a beauty T

Thanks Tony!

I'll need them eventually.

If your front ball cup has gone, replace the bushings in the rear one at the same time, and sort out the alignment of the stick at the same time (WSM details the angles). Having a factory-tight shifter makes a huge difference to enjoyment in a manual

Get the upgraded parts from 928MS instead of replacing with new originals. Do a search for some threads on tricks to get the front ball cup popped on.

I'm with you on the different driving experience and fun for all different reasons. I have a forced induction 997 too and really enjoy both cars.

Isn't that amazing? I've driven a fair number of cars at speed, and I get this feeling of increased connectedness more with the 928 than anything else. I had a Fox-body Mustang GT, which was a fun, fun car, and it got positively frightening above 90mph.

Enjoy your Shark! We'll see you next year at Frenzy.

I had two fox bodies back in the 90's. Anything > 90 was scary indeed. Cheers!
