Default inspection help2

I have found a 1989 928GT in Atlanta (Marietta) GA. I flew down today to look at it. It is a beautiful very well maintained car. I had my The Essential Buyers Guide with me. Most everything I could check I did and it scored very well. I am a former Porsche service technician but I left the business in 1988.
I would still like a qualified technician to give it a once over. At idle there is a noticeable surge. It increased for a bit while driving it when the car was at idle. Upon returning to the shop it stopped. I was unable to get the car up on a lift but I think it might have an exhaust leak behind the converters. Same area on each one. The volt meter seemed to drop down more than it should when I was driving it as well.
If I could even just get the name of a shop I would be happy to do the follow up. The timing of the inspection is important because I did put money down on the car. But before I complete the transaction, I need to know if a gremlin or two lurking somewhere under the bonnet.
Thank you,
Tom

Well... it's a 29 year old car. It's gonna have a gemelin or two. Even new cars have gremlins, sometimes big ones. A surging idle and wacky volt meter suggests you have a few ground issues and perhaps need an alternator. Thats just my wild guess from a fantastic distance. I'd expect ground issues for many 29 year old cars from that very humid part of the country.

For many of us who appreciate older cars, chasing down a few gremlins is part of the fun.

All that said it would be great if you could have service records. From a behavioral analytics perspective...people often don't put money into a car that has a known problem. If they did service it what was the quality of the parts they chose. It would still be a good idea to get it up on a ramp and have a Mechanic look it over for the big stuff, leaking rack, bearing noise, wheel bearings, leaking shocks, evidence of a collision. I hope someone else chimes in with a local trusted mechanic.

Rich VM runs Garage 928 in that area. He knows his stuff.

"Kevin in Atlanta" is a user on here. He also knows his stuff.

Thank you for responding. I understand it is a 29 year old car and it will have a few issues. The current owner has all his service records. He just got done repairing several oil leaks. The car is on the high end of excellent condition. The Car Fax report came back clean. I just want to cover my rear end a little as the car is in Atlanta and I am in St. Louis. It is kind of a double check.
I will try to find Garage 928.
Thank you tom
