Projectors?

I really would like to have real HID headlights...
I tried one of the first generation hi/lo beam HID kits, but it sucked. Too much glare, and the high beam was a joke. I ripped it all out and put back the H4 bulbs.
Now there's new conversion bulbs that actually move the bulb to simulate the multi-filament H4 bulb.
I could put the new bulbs in my crappy HID system for as low as $120.
Or...
I've been eyeing projector conversion parts on eBay. I could fab up somethin' and maybe modernize my car.
This fellow sells a nice hi/lo kit:

Deep down, I'm not sure if replacing the pop-ups would look good.
The picture below is a widebody, but the problem is basically the same, the projector headlights look too small for the width of the car, don't they?

Although, they are starting to grow on me...

Thanks Tony.
That's pretty much what I was thinking about...
Looks good, no?

If I could make the cover have the appearance of the 8" H4s when down, that would be schweet.

Nicole - Do you have any pictures from the front, facing the car?

I assume the headlights are fixed, but I can't figure out what kind of lens cover it has.
It looks like it might be a clear center with a fade to paint color?

The 928-4 had "plexiglas bubbles" that were partially blackened from the inside. The fenders were changed to acommodate the different shape and requirement for a steeper angle of the openings - basically, this had more of a 911-look with raised fenders. I think the 968 picked up on this theme, while they left the 928 alone. I do like this front design, though, and think they should have implemented it on the GTS.

You might search out Hella lights, they make a series of driving/fog/offroad lights including and HID system in familiar looking 8" diameter. No clue if they off these in any DOT approved or high/low standard headlights.

Two friends of mine installed the Catz HID system into their cars. Both systems were very nice and the difference was dramatic. These were done on 99 S40 Volvo's.
The DOT banned all aftermarket HID systems around November last year. I had some interesting talks with these companies at SEMA that found out about the new law during the show. They can still be found through some gray market channels. They paid around $500 for the kit that included everything.

drnick,
There should be enough room to put those hi/lo assemblies in the aero cover. This would surely be faster to engineer too.
The assemblies above above are supposed to be 6" deep with a 90mm lens. The external length of our headlamp unit is 7.5" from the front of the H4 glass to the rear tip of the cover.
If some light was bled from the rear, through a diffuser, it would give the appearance of the 8" reflector.
...
Note: I have not been able to keep my headlamps from cycling when turning them off, and it's making me mad enough to cull them!
Deleting the pop-ups would save weight and maintain the aerodynamics at night.
The best look for a fender mount, I've decided, would be covers simulating the 8" headlamps when in the down position. I think the car looks best in this mode.
