Default Kumho Ecsta 711 245\45-16 summer tires for $53.00!

If you're still running stock sizes on the rear of your 87+ cars, this looked like a pretty good deal on the cheap!

I have Kuhmo Ecsta 711s on my Audi S4. They're OK tires, especially for the price. I'm a bit disappointed by both the grip and the road noise, but they do seem to wear quite well - so like it or not I'm stuck with them for a while. I'll probably buy something else next time, but can't say I've been unhappy with them - just not very excited either.

I've heard all the hoopla about these Kuhmo tires and it led me to buy a set for my old, but well-kempt, BMW 535is. They made that car ride/drive like it was a Ford Pinto on solid rubber tires with no shocks. Plus, it broke traction at almost every stop light, particularly in the rain.

I punted them back to Tirerack after multiple calls to their customer service dept and went back with my beloved Dunlop SP8000s (225/50/16 all around). Ahhhhhh...no substitute for good rubber...even if the car on top is an $80k vehicle. Tires are the sine qua non of both performance & driving experience.....IMHO.

ps.
I did get to keep the $50 US Savings Bond that Kumho offered on a set of 4 tires It'll be worth the face value in 20 years...or so

I ran Kumho 711'a and replaced with 712's. I assure you those are very good tyres on a 928. I ran stock sizes. My current Dunlop SP's are like solid rock compared to those Kumho 712's .... many locals (Adam u there?) run 712's and have had excellent results. I've had mine up over 140 repeatedly, and I believe JE has even seen the upside of 40mph ;-P hehe ... since he got them. Excellent tyre. Outperformed my RE730's too. Very predictable, very sticky, and heat or cold do not alter performance in the least.

Now, the 711 .... not in the same league unless it's a grocery-getter.

Heinrich,
Thanks for your comments on the Kuhmo 712s. I'm glad to hear that there has been some good experiences with them in the 928 crowd. At the price, they may be worth trying again. I still need two new fronts and those damned 17" RE730 are $150 or so each. Oh well...might be worth $110 to try a pair "mixed" with my RE730s on the rear.
Cheers,
TUK

Kumho 712 on the front made my car pull to the right. That was immediately fixed when I switched to Yokohama AVS.

The tires are what holds us to the road. Maybe not the place to go super cheap...

I've got a set on my 928 and for me at least, they work fine.

Vredestein, Sportrac 225/50VR16. Put a set on my '84 10,000 miles ago. A trip up into the mountains with some wicked turns and switchbacks and never lost traction once, even in the wet. Had them up to 120 on the highway with no problems. Noise is minimal for a V-rated tire. Wear, so far, is very good, minimal. $588.00 for the set including mount/balance. (Local guy here in Charlotte).

Got to say I'm very happy with them.

Interesting. I've read alot of favorable comments on the Kuhmos on this board in the past. Anyway, I'm having 2 put on the rear in a couple of days. I figured for 53 bucks, it's worth a shot, especially since I got a wild hair and decided to put 245/50's in the rear. What a LARGE mistake!

I'm not running stock sizes mind you, as I have 18" wheels, but I have had VERY good results with the 712's. As a matter of fact, I'm on my second set. Better wet traction than the RE-730's that I was running, although dry traction isn't quite as good. (still more than any reasonable driver would ever need) They seem to run as quiet as the 730's, and given how hard I drive the car, they have worn very well. IMHO, for an everyday driver, the 712's are great. Just my 2 cents.

Mistake!!! I just got dunlop 8000's instead of kumhos. 225/50/16 and 245/50/16. that's what was on it before and I love the wide rear tire look. an I going to die next time I corner hard?

The guy at tire rack said they have bad road noise and mediocre performance. The dunlops feel like the car is floating - at least when they are brand new.

I'm running the 712's now in stock sizes. For the street, they are fine. I'd rate them as very good in wet and dry. I would have bought a different tire if I didn't have dedicated track rims, as I don't think the 712's would do well on the track. Maybe someone has some personal experience in this department. The 712's seem to have a kind of cobbled road feel to them going down the road, and start to squeal pretty early on in the corners, although they do hold. I don't notice the road noise that seems to be associated with them, and they are very predictable in their handling characteristics. I've had mine up to 130 several times, and they drive straight and true.
