I'm preparing for a dashboard/interior refurbishment, and would appreciate some thoughts/ideas about my stereo situation.

I bought the car with a Pioneer FEX-95 stereo with a separate equaliser unit, and didn't think it's a good fit for the 928 - somehow a classic black radio just seems more appropriate. In addition, the installation (especially of the equaliser) is messy.

My first thought was to source a classic Blaupunkt stereo, or buy one of the new Porsche Classic radios (not sure if it's worth the price, and if the Nav is really usable). I already have a second hand centre console with analog clock to clean up the mess left by the equaliser cut-out.

Then, as I was researching the Pioneer stereo online, I found a sales brochure which features an interesting choice of vehicle to model the installation.





Suddenly I'm having second thoughts about getting rid of the Pioneer. It's still in perfect working condition, and if I manage to do the installation similar to the picture above it could be a pretty cool result.

I'd love to hear your opinion about the way to go with this, or perhaps even if anyone else has a similar Pioneer stereo installed.

 

I think it looks amazing; a perfect period-correct unit. I could support moving the equalizer and restoring the clock.

If you need something modern with the correct look that isn't stupid expensive, look into the BMW business CDs or Continental radios. You can find tons of them on eBay.

 

I install a contential and it looks really great... nearly oem. I did replace the **** with my old beker **** but otherwise fits great. I'll update with a pic this evening.

Really cool old ad find. While I think the Pioneer looks pretty cool, and I love that its period correct, I'm on board with the black looks better than silver in this application. I have a Porsche Classic Radio in my 996 911 and I love it. You can read my write up here: https://rennlist.com/forums/996-foru...a-996-a-8.html. It does obviously come with some drawbacks, namely cost. This car is pretty much a 100/day daily driver for me in the summer so bluetooth and hands free phone use, along with an OEM look with my biggest reasons for getting it.

I have a similar issue as you in my 928. I can't justify getting the PCR in this car since I do not drive it all that often. When I bought it, it came with a faceless head unit. So to see if everything worked, and tide me over until I can find the right vintage look (or vintage) unit, I bought and installed this one: . It was cheap, it sounds good, has all the bluetooth and third party bells and whistles (XM, Spotify, Pandora). You can also set the color (which I set to amber). It looks okay but definitely too modern. My quest for the perfect option will continue but in the meantime, I have everything I could want functionally.

 

I have an extra center console and digital clock.

 

I have a similar pioneer in my 87 and it works very well. Mine has the track advance wheel behind the volume **** which makes it very easy to change tracks. But I just picked up a Reno so the Pioneer will be for sale if anyone is interested.

I rely on my phone for music source and equalization, so I'm not concerned with head unit functionality other than bluetooth...and I would like a back up camera without going to a double din. I thought this embarrasingly cheap unit seemed to resemble a vintage blaupunkt

Thanks for all the great replies and suggestions. Some good options there, but my decision might have just become more difficult to make! I'm thinking of doing a mock-up of a decent installation with the Pioneer, just to see what it looks like. If it doesn't appeal to me, I may order one of the suggested units.

Thanks, I had a look at those. Especially the Continental seems to be a nice option with all the functionality I need/desire.

It would be great to see the Continental in position. It's always a bit easier to judge than by looking only at stock images.

Very nice write-up on the PCR. It's still tempting to have something Porsche branded with the right look and feel in there, but I really don't need the Nav (phone is ok), and would've preferred a non-Nav version at 40% of the price. As for the modern look, I'm really trying to avoid it. Had I not had a radio in for now, I might've considered it as an interim option, but I'm looking for a longer term solution now.

That looks pretty good, especially at the price! Bluetooth is the most important function for me, as I do everything else through my phone. The old Pioneer with a stand-alone equaliser and leveliser is pretty ridiculous for my use, but it's certainly a conversation starter. I might see if bluetooth integration is possible without butchering it too much. I have to say, the back up camera is a really nice extra. What does the unit look like in real life? Is the quality reasonably? Would love to see the installation, and also how you dealt with the back up camera. This might be a very real option for me.

The Pioneer has an interesting clean look - I suspect it was very different even back in the day (perhaps even more so then).

However I don't think it really matches to a 928 very well. Plus modern decks can do so much more - the challenge is finding one that (at least to you) looks like it really belongs.

have you thought about a double din android unit? i've seen pics of a few double din installs that look pretty good, and there are quite a few android head units that are a simple touch screen with a matte black frame.
