Default Is this the wrong water pump?

I have a 1987 928 S4 and I am working through my timing belt job, I pulled the old water pump off. Two things stood out to me. One, it had an extra bracket on the end of the timing belt tensioner pulley that I wasn't expecting. Two, the shoulder for the timing belt tensioner pulley does not match what the new pump has. Photos are below.

Did I receive the wrong water pump? If it makes any difference, the alternator and crankshaft pulleys don't seem to be from an '87. The number of ribs on the alternator belt and pulley is 6, which seems match what a GT has, according to parts lookups. The 1987 is supposed to have 5 ribs according to those same parts lookups.

Anyway, before I go to the vendor who sold me the water pump and ask for something else, advice would be appreciated.

The 'new' pump is an early type, 78-86.

Fortunately, IIRC, in another thread you said you are (wisely) installing a PKT. This means you can use either the early or a (more costly) late pump.

The PKT hardware pack includes parts for both types.

If you are installing the PKT you can use the early pump. Make SURE you install the plugs ken provides in that hole at the front, or you will have water pouring out at a rather fast rate.

Hey hey, you're stalking me!

You're absolutely correct. I am installing a PKT. I bought it before you came out with the newer "silver" version, but I assume that it will install on the older style pump just fine as well.

Thanks for the quick response. I guess I needed to read the PKT manual before worrying about having the right water pump

Asking only because you didn't mention who the vendor was; plastic or metal impeller? Laso switched to plastic ~8 years ago, but probly some old stock on a shelf somewhere.

Plastic impeller. That much I made sure of when I ordered everything two years ago

Bet they came from Roger. The pump is an early one modified by GB to use the later tensioner assembly. Done when the later pumps were NLA from Laso but since Roger got Laso to put them back in to production, the modification is not needed now.

What is the modification? Because it doesn't appear to work with my factory tensioner.

As expected, you guys were right about it fitting just fine with the aftermarket tensioner. Thanks for the reminder on the plug. I have no leaks The cooling system seems to work properly.

mmmm. I have examples of old and new pumps on the bench , and looking at them side by side one day there is a difference. The early pump(off my 83) seems to have more clearance between the pump pulley and the body than the late pump, by several mm. To me this means the early pump will not line up correctly with the other belt pulleys on a late block? Or something else changed to compensate for the difference?
