Help! Handbrake tube stuck in hub carrier
I'm deep into my rear wheel bearing change and have only one, what I thought 'easy' part left to remove, before I have the hub carrier on the bench.
Boy was I wrong, I'm stuck on the metal tube that goes in to the hub carrier with the hand brake cable.
it's a bear to remove, I have tryed heat, hammering, prying etc...
Would be greatful for any tip on what to do.
Everything I had anticipated to be tough have been easy so far.
The long bolt trough the shock and hub carrier came out so easy, just some light tapping on the end.
Enclosed a pic of the little bugger.
Thanks all for helping out.
Cheers/Peter

see how you have the vice grips yah take them off and get a pipe wrench, heat up the aluminum and then try turning it with a pipe wrench, as they can get WAY more grip than vice grips, if that doesn't work then time to cut drill and tap it out

Hey Lizard, appreciate your input and will try that tomorrow.
I have a lot of tools in the garage but not a pipe wrench.
Guess now is a good time to get one....

Heat the aluminum with a torch, chill the steel rod with dry ice. quick squirt of WD40 and go at it with a small pipe wrench.

Thanks for all advices, will soak it with WD40 over night and buy a pipe wrench on my way home from work tomorrow.
Then have another go with the heat and hopefully it will give away.
Luckily there is snow on the ground and plenty of time.
Thanks/Peter

If WD-40 doesn't allow easy release, try a good penetrating oil (eg. 'Aerokroil') to break the oxide layer - and just enough heat to help the fluid flow into the area and wait 10-15 min.

Hi all,
tryed all the advices today and ended up braking the steel pipe close to the hub carrier, it was just to much old grit holding there I guess.
Well at least I have the hub at my bench now....
Does anyone know what the best procedure to get the remains out of the hub carrier is?
Drilling carefully or??
And is the handbrake wire available and what are the cost for it?
Is it one pcs per side or is it one complete assembly?
Cheked the workshop manual and couldn't find any detila on that.

The hand brake is two pieces. The "long" part runs from the handle to the right wheel and the short part runs to the left side from about the middle of the rear suspension. Doesn't look like the cable is seaparte from the sheath.
The tubes are available separately.

OK second side done the same way, had to brake the tube.
Success fully drove the remainings out of the hub carrier from the inside.
If I buy a complete brake wire, does the tubes come with it.
Does anyone know the cost?
Couldn't find it on the web catalogs at the big three.

Peter,
The cables -used, no new ones listed- are :
left -short cable- $75.00
right -long cable - $ 100.00 at 928 International.
Christ on a Crutch!
You might have to call/E mail the BIG Three for price comparison and to see if they can get you the tubes at all.
Might be easier to take some measurements and have the tubes fabricated at a local tubing shop.

Say what is that car in the backgound?
