Of course, one will invest the same money, on the same parts, and the same service for either. I don't see the Boxster, unless one is a real fan of the design.

I would take a Solstice coupe with the turbo, but they are pricey.

Dear Lord, they are different cars! What do you care if someone prefers the Boxster over a 996? By your rationale nobody would ever buy a 928 because they could get a 996 for less or similar money!

Great, you posted cars in a price spread from $12k - $14k and we are talking about cars you can find for $6k - $8k

Moot point, even if they were the same price, I'd rather have a Boxster. It's a better car IMO.

Lol. That's hardcore. My dad's been wanting a Saturn Sky for years. He's retired now and been talking about getting a fun sports car. I'm keep pushing him to the F-Type, but he said it wouldn't look right in the neighborhood. Dad's a blue collar Yinzer from Pittsburgh's south side and thinks the neighbors will think he's trying to show them up. I keep reminding him that he lives in the burbs now and everyone is driving BMWs.

You know what car will be cheaper to own, operate, easier to work on and will blow the living doors off a 996? Yes, the Corvette. So why are we not talking about Corvette's? Because this topic of discussion is Boxsters, not Corvette's or the 996.

Back to the point - Boxsters are dirt cheap fun, snag a good one now before all that is left is basket cases. Simple enough?

C4 Corvettes, especially a 1989 6-speed Z51 car, would be cheap to own and maintain, and in the same general price range for now.

But even ahead of the Boxster, I'd rather drive a Miata, and that's even a stretch. But again, nobody's asked for my approval. Just my 2c.

Every time I see a low mileage, cheap C4 I have to pry the phone out of my hand to avoid calling them. So tempting.....

My wife wants an Elise:

Boxster showed up today on the FB Marketplace locally. Asking $2900.00. I laughed.

Unless you must have something newer then look at the Miata.
Here's the relativety: discussing the early Boxster and other cars in both its price range and category is like midgets arguing the toss over who is tallest.
Save up and move on up.

PS- An Elise is a great shout and a reason for saving for something better. Although it is annoying that the better newer Exige / Elise models weren't marketed and sold in the US.

Hey, c'mon chump change, you got in my grill first on post 35 telling me how I'm so wrong. In case alzheimers has set in:

" Totally Disagree.
I have no desire or use for a 996 and I've driven plenty of them. Great cars, but not what I want. "
So, one point is you totally disagree, then turn right around and tell us they are great cars.

Zoiks, if you ran out of Ambien, find a Xanax or something. Asking me why I care when you want to argue. If you like your Boxster, you can keep your Boxster.

have a nice day

See, I still do not grasp the concept of "better" in this instance. For starters, the Boxster is more solid, better engineering, more cargo space, more comfortable, could actually be use in a Wisconsin winter with proper tires....

The Elise is a go-cart with a license plate with enough room for maybe one bag of groceries. If my wife had the desire to actually do track events or even autocross, then I'd get serious about getting one. Buying another car only to be used on "nice days" and fun runs.... not in the cards.

I didn't change my mind on anything. The 996 is a great car, but I prefer the Boxster, this isn't rocket science.

Please note the stuff below what you quoted. the stuff you conveniently left off the quoted material.

I will kill no thread - before its time.

It's time.

You seem to be isolating this conversation solely into whether a person should or shouldn't buy an early Boxster. Without any alternative.
(FWIW, I don't understand why you post a photo of an Elise and then dismiss a POV on it).
If thats your angle (early-Boxster or no early-Boxster), then I'll say this:
I'd rather walk until i'd established the means for something better. I'd have the self-esteem until then that I didn't have to compromise.
