1980 5-spd, black carpet
PO complained of bad smell in the car and had no clue why the Brake Warning Indicator was on (brake system has been redone recently with receipts - and works well btw)... Long story short... Clutch MS seals toast and I sent an inquiry to Roger for new clutch system components. I turned up the DS carpet and padding which has been really saturated with brake fluid and found enough more fluid residue to puddle in the low spots on the floor... Lots of fluid. Anyway...
If anyone has a parts car with decent black carpet I could use the DS floor sections and underlayment padding. ... (I have a couple cans of brake cleaner to clean the floor...) Please PM me.
Thank you. Brad

take the carpet out and rinse it out with water,
then add some tide and hot water and scrub the carpet,
then rinse with fresh water,
let it air dry this should restore the carpet.
Vacuum it to get the nap back in order

I'm with Stan, plus I usually put the rugs in the top-load washing machine on gentle/hand-wash cycle, then hand-place the pieces flat and nap-out on the wall of the tub to rinse/spin a few times. I've had better results from that than hand washing pieces especially in the car. It's virtually impossible to get them clean and rinsed in place. The brake fluid can be tough on the padding, but doesn't break down the carpet except maybe the dye. It's certainly worth a try if the rug pieces are still in physically good condition.

Brake fluid is water soluble.
Do not use brake cleaner anywhere you want to remove it....you will have a worse mess.

I would avoid putting the floor mat in the washer as-is, I tried this once and it came apart, clogging my machine with jute. In hindsight, the mat was 30 years old so....duh. What a mess
The second time around, I carefully removed the stitching and piping around the perimeter of the mat and disassembled the backing and inner-jute from the actual carpet. Then I washed the carpet in the machine with regular soap and softener to great success. Afterwards I took the cleaned carpets to my local upholstery shop and they installed new jute, backing and piping for less than you might think. Worked a treat and the original mats were as good as new, no more old car smell
