Just to start and run the engine on a 79, since the cis is so simple, you only seem to need a few powered wires and a momentary for the starter.
has anyone done this?

Ah, yes. Pump*s* on the CIS. Forgot about that, thanks. I was more focusing on the front of the car.

Not that much to power on a CIS car. As always: Fuel, ignition, compression. Add the WUR to the list if you plan to run the car for more than a minute or two. Strobing the start-up injector will aid starting but isn't mandatory.
You can jumper the ignition "booster" connection at the starter to get ignition, and the other (50) connection to crank the starter. Fuel pump needs a 30->87 jumper in the relay socket.. easy peasey.

What strobes the start up injector?

The cold start injector is powered by the time-temp sensor on the water bridge, but you could easily power it (injector) with a temporary manual lead for a few secs to get things wet, but dont over do it - There are some numbers on it (time-temp sensor) that indicate length it should run - IIRC its 8 secs.
