Belt Tool
What the hell is the deal with that timing belt tensioning tool for $500+? Is this really necessary or can I just use the $59 aftermarket tool? Wow! Has anyone used either of these?

I've used both. The $59.00 deal works fine. It just doesn't let you set the alternator belt tension (newer cars).
That I can live with.
FYI- The $$ tool is just under $400, not $500.

Re: Belt Tool
Get $59 Kempf tool. Mine was recently tested agaist factory tool and it was spot on and much easier to get same results every time. Factory tool gave about 0.1 different number on two consecutive measurings depending on minor difference how it was held. It's way too complex for the job. Too many parts that can break even though it's very sturdy.

It's not science... the tension just has to be "in the zone".
The tension is going to change +/- with age, temperature, etc., anyway.
