The fronts are the wider rear wheels from an S4, aren't they? But the rears seem to be carrying an awful lot of tire for what appear to be narrow front flat dishes?
edit: Watching the video, it doesn't always appear that way...I only really noticed it in the blown-up shots above....so maybe I'm wrong...

Good catch! Very odd. Low profile LF and RR. Much higher profile LR and RF. Mistake in the pits? Doesn’t sound like it given the 1st in class finish, 3rd overall. ???

Yup!
I was at Page Auto yesterday, we were watching this video on the 4k big screen Jim has on the wall. The one scene Jim paused, backed up and said: "Look at the wheels....." He's had more than a few 928's come into his shop with the F/R wheels swapped.
So....a mistake or an attempt to dial out the under-steer these cars are known for? I'm going to guess it was a planned swap for handling reasons.
This is assuming those are "off the shelf" wheels and not some custom made offset / size we are not aware of.

In the video you can see plenty of shots on track with the same size wheels on front and rear. It doesn't appear they rotated them, they purposely put wider wheels on the front at some point.
This particular driver stared 17 Formula 1 races & won the 1970 LeMans (in the rain) in a 917k. I'm sure whatever car setup they ended up with was by his request.

The logo on the 928 should have been AARP ! the driver is 78 years old. That is true vintage racing And in the rain they easily could have " borrowed " some full tread tires off some ones S-4

I sent the link and our debate to a PCA instructor.
This was his take:
Wider tires on the front and narrower on the back would elicit oversteer.
Front would grip more, rear would be the looser element all things equal as far as chassis set up- sway bars, shock setting etc...
On a wet track, racing in the rain, you want to loosen all your sway bars, have less air in the tires, release gas in the shocks if you have remote reservoirs;
anything to make the car less stiff and more cushy and spongy so you can feel it moving around and react to that.
If it is stiffly sprung it will breakaway with no warning or chance to recover.

Awesome that they put the spotlight on the 928.
The wheel situation is definitely bizarre, but there's another major problem!
The driver's suit, intended to look "classic" like the car, had a Shell pectin on it from the 60's. The proper pectin for the 80's would have had the word Shell under the pectin and no red background. (In a bold marketing move, the word Shell was dropped completely in '99 since the pectin had become so recognizable).
Anyway, great video!
