Replacing oil pressure sender - Can this be done without draining the oil?
#16
Hiya,
I was just about to remove my oil pressure sender via the removal of the alternator route when I read this.
so is it possible to remove the sender if I remove the oil filter first and have stubby 24/27 wrenches? That’d be soooo much better than having to remove the alternator. I don’t have help so it seems an alternator removal would be a major chore with a decent amount of swearing.
I have an 89 ROW and the sender is toast, oil needs to be changed including filter, and I have a leak in my oil cooler at the nuts, fingers crossed it’s just new washers needed. My plan was to drain the oil, remove the filter and sender, put in new washers and top up the oil.
then I thought wouldn’t it be nice to replace the sender and test to see if it works first before I drain the oil and replace the washers?
any suggestions are appreciated as always. I’ve definitely learned a lot from y’all but man, is it ever intimidating working on a car like this for the first time!
Appreciate you!!!

Are you sure the sender is toast? The wires carrying the signal to the 14 pin connector are particularly susceptible to failure for some reason.

Easy to do with the short open end wrenches (spanners to Fred R!). I bought both 24mm and 27mm short wrenches on Amazon. Just a perfect fit. I'd guess about 3-4 oz of oil lost in the process of removing filter and replacing the sender.
