Any tips on replacing door support? [928 537 033 04]
My Door supports are worn out and won't hold the doors open. This is item #9 in the diagram below. I have the replacement parts but have never removed the door card or done any restoration work in this area of the car. I'm looking for any advice or tips on how to accomplish this replacement. And any WYAIT comments would be appreciated.

For door panel removal:

For the door stays, when I installed mine I found a mirror very handy for helping me get the bolts into the base of the stay that sits in the door - it’s impossible to get your head round to view it directly! Also make sure to mount it the correct way up, so the curvature matches the one in the car (curves away from car body).
After its installed you’ll enjoy playing with the three positions the door will hold on!

You can also get this kit to fix this problem (door won't hold open).
Very easy to install. No need to remove the door panel.
Put these on my car few years ago.

Adrian - Thank you for the door panel removal file. That will definitely make it easier to line up my trim removal tools to pop the plastic fasteners without breaking them. From what pictures of the door I studied, figured I'd be using a mirror somewhere during the installation.
Bertrand - I did buy that kit but could not get the long metal insert to go in anywhere near as far as was required! No amount of finagling made it work. Very frustrating. Plus now I want a more permanent solution.
Anyone install something like Dynamat on the back side of the door card? Or is it layed down on some other surface? If so what kind of a difference did it make on the interior sound level?

Thread that covers vapor barriers and panel removal. Post 22 has pics of the vapor barrier. (found it a lot quicker this time):

If you use Dynamat, Brown bread, B-Quiet, etc. Put it on the door itself, not the cardboard panel.
It's a mass loader and will prevent the door from resonating and making noise, think holding a bell directly on the metal bell itself and trying to ring it.
You can also use it as a replacement for the vapor barrier, only that it will be more difficult to service the inside of the door later on.

Unfortunately I could not get this kit to install on my '86.5. Couldn't get it shoved in the door side. Any tips?

Also bought the aftermarket kits for my 86.5 with no success and ended up buying the proper replacement parts which pleased my wife who had problems getting in and out of the car on a slope. Easy to fit. While in there I put Dynamat panels on the door, serviced the window motors, new nylon bushings for the power window guides and felt guides for the glass. Must go back in and do the vapour barrier correctly as per previous post.

Murray928 - What MY do you have?
I'm counting (3) 85-86.5 MY replies here where that Garage9 kit couldn't be installed. Is this a common problem with the S3's?
Bogdann - Thanks for the list of other WYAIT projects.

Make sure you orient the door stays in the correct position. Mark the old ones on the top then compare them to the new ones before install. There's a slight curve to the arm.

That's strange that all of you guys that had problems installing the kit own earlier cars.
It's been a while but if I remember well, I think I had to "play" a bit with it to get it inside the door.
But it worked.
I'll check to see if there was any part # change from from '86 to '87 on the door support.
Maybe they changed the part and it was easier to install the kit on newer cars. ??

I've had the Jageng door stay kits on both of mine for well over ten years now.
I did not encounter any problems installing them, but both of my 928's are S4's.
The door stays are still performing their job quite well.
