Mine is a 1985 Euro S2, but this kit should fit all years. My excellent polish mechanic who does all my work, fitted mine for me.

I disassembled the left side door panel today to troubleshoot a rocking window, poor door panel fit and a non-functional door stay. When I pulled the door stay, the portion of the moving bar (part with the wavy detents not seen from the outside) was covered with a brown, hard, wax-like substance. The stay mechanism itself was impregnated with this same substance. I concluded that this brown goop was jamming the stay mechanism and its rollers in an open position. Using WD-40, I thoroughly cleaned all the brown gunk on both parts as best I could, reassembled the stay, and it worked perfectly. Only additional trick is to disassemble the stay pin first, and reassemble it last - this provides a few more degrees of door opening to access the 2 stay mounting screws.

The brown gunk is rust and oil and grease deposits water drips down the inside of the door and onto the door check then it rusts
the 2 pin rollers eventually stick in their holes then the arm wears them flat since they stopped rolling
best to buy new door checks and put them in

Pretty straight forward.
I did this on the 79 over 10 years ago, and the door stays still work like new. (3 distinct stops)
If I remember correctly, you need a long allen wrench to help install into the door istelf. (or torx? it's been a while)
The old ones were toast, the door would close on my leg every time...

When you put in new ones NOTE that they also _need_ part #12, the gasket. The old one is gone by now.
Do not over tighten and squeeze out the new gasket when you install it..tight/snug.
