Looking for Dad's car

Seems to me you still got a result of sorts. Fact is by now most manual 928's will be owned by folks with specific reasons for wanting to keep them and whereas a percentage might be willing to part with them chances are that most will not.
Nonetheless an interesting and unusual thread and if they know you are interested always a chance they will get back to you later. Such is life- just get into the Devore car and beat the snot out of it!

Update: Through the amazing help of several rennlist members: I want to specifically call out Rob Edwards and Adamant1971 as two who heavily contributed....there are others as well, I think I *may* have found my dad's car.
I say *may* because I am not sure it will ever be confirmed, but it is likely. The car was traced down to one that is in Brampton, Ontario, originally from Edmonton where my dad lived at the time. I was given contact info for the owner, a wealthy guy with quite a few cars and ZERO online presence. I got in touch with a relative who would not confirm much about the car other than what I already knew....these people are VERY private. He did state that the owner loved the car, owned it for 17 years, and the personalized license plate on the car even stated that it was his CHILD. Wow.
My inquiry was treated with little interest because of the love the guy has for the car, and I totally get it.
My gut tells me that this *probably* was my dad's car based upon the research I did, but hey, the new owner has owned it an order of magnitude longer than my dad ever did, and he loves the car enough to keep it permanently, so why shouldn't he continue to do so? Who am I to take it away?
So I will let that lead be for now. I'm pretty satisfied that it was the car, of course, leaving contact info in case anyone changed their mind.
Thank all of you guys for your help. Still casually looking, but I'd bet good money that my dad's old car is in Ontario.
Here's to the current owner, a great 928 steward if I ever saw one.

So was it actually an '88 and not an '87? Besides being from Edmonton what else about it makes you feel it was probably your Dad's old car? If it actually was your dad's car, then it's better to know it's found a good home than finding out it was parted out a decade ago. So are you still thinking of finding a similar S4? (<---- EDIT: Chris beat me to it)

Guys,
Here is my thought pattern. See how you feel about my logic:
1. Dad swears it was a 1988. He's not old enough to be senile or anything, but he says it was 90% a 1988.
2. The car is a 5 speed, of the color blue. Sure, it could have been Baltic blue, but I used to live in Edmonton in the early 1990s, and the only Baltic blue cars were GTs. In fact, the one that just sold on BAT was a baltic blue GT.
3. I was a teen, but my dad used to take me to autocross in that car. There were other 928s, but his was the ONLY one I had ever seen in Venetian Blue. Sure, not every owner was a PCA member, but let me briefly illustrate what Edmonton was like in the 1990s. 700K people, oilfield town, Capital of the province. Predominantly a blue collar town, the place had ONE Porsche Dealership - Norden Autohaus (now Porsche Centre Edmonton). All porsches were bought and sold there. The only distant competition was Eurasia motors for service. Since there were so few Porsches in the city - you culd go days or even weeks without seeing another - if there was another venetian blue 928 in town I would have known about it.
4. Carfax shows the car in Edmonton, registered there during the time my dad would've owned it.
5. Then, after about the time he would have sold it, Carfax then shows a move to Calgary (probably to auction). Calgary was a more affluent and cosmopolitan city and probably a better place to sell such an expensive car.
6. Carfax shows a move to Ontario, where the current owner has it.
7. From the conversation with the son, I am told the car has a "white" interior. His words.
So we have a 1988 S4 5 speed blue 928 with a white interior that lived in the same city during the same time my dad would've owned it.
It's not 100% absolute, but it is pretty close. In fact, close enough for me.
I would like to recreate the car; I think I'll call Mohr and see what they want for that one. That one is really in great shape with low miles and is closer in condition to what it would've been like new.
MAN what a fun journey though!!!!!!!!

Is the owner in Brampton or just north of it in Caledon? I think I saw this car (that colour is unique enough that I remember seeing it) a few years ago when I worked for the Region of Peel in Brampton. There used to be a 928 owner's group, before RL, that I met with a couple of times, once in Mississauga and a second time near the Pearson Airport. Maybe I saw it there, can't recall where but I'm pretty sure I saw an S4 with that colour.

Owner lives in Brampton, car is serviced in the Rexdale / Etobicoke area. I think this car's hunting grounds are generally the region around the airport. I bet you saw the car!!!! Super distinctive.

Man, this thread is so full of win! Stunning what this community is capable of. And the record time to get to this result is incredible!

However, the two major players in this - my dad and the selling dealer - knew jack squat about the history.
It took Rennlist to both generate a set of plausible VINs and then narrow those down to some candidates for this to all work.
Add a sprinkle of internet technology, and now what was impossible 15 years ago is now possible.
Thanks again all....

I just made a deal on the 53K mile Venetian Blue one at Mohr. Will pick up within a couple of weeks. I'm so excited.
Not sure if I am going through some kind of mid life crisis (I'm 44), but now I can sit behind the wheel of the Venetian Blue S4, slip in a Nirvana or Naughty by Nature CD, and pretend it's 1991 all over again.
There is just something about the Porsche 928 that still makes me feel like a kid all over again....

This is a nice service you have access to in Canada... I’ve never had much luck getting owner info out of US DMVs. Even my law enforcement connections say they need a legit legal reason to pull owner info on a VIN.
