Looking for Dad's car
Over the years I have been looking for my dad's old 928 - the car that started all of this for me. I don't have to find the *actual* car, but I would like to find a dead ringer clone for it. Instead of trolling all the ads, I thought I'd post a thread. Maybe someone knows where one like this is.
It was a fairly rare color combo - a 1987 or 1988 S4, 5 speed, Venetian Blue Metallic with Ivory leather and.....this is the kicker.....blue piping on the seats. Thus far I have found Venetian Blue autos, Venetian blue 5 speeds with the wrong color interior, and occasionally, the right car without the blue piping on the seats. I know, kinda picky, but for me, when my dad owned this car almost new in 1990, it was my dream supercar. He sold it in the early 1990s. I miss that car, many good times in it. Would like to recreate it. Keep an eye out! |
Have you seen the '90 GT just up for sale on Bring a Trailer? Not excatly as you described but close.
|
I have! That's what prompted me to write this thread in the first place actually. It was sooo close. Except no piping and, well, it's a GT. Dad's car didn't have airbags or the GT dash.
Usually I could care less about little details like that, but in this case, I want the exact car. Someone has it - heck, it was an oddball color but not ultra rare. Probably a few hundred made like that. He didn't order it, he bought it like that used in 1988 I believe. |
Do you have the VIN? It might be in the 928 Registry (?)

Actually 2 more things.....it was for sure a 1987, because he bought it in 1988 used. Also, it was a Canadian car, mileage in km.
|
It does have piping on the seats, unless you were referring to a different piping? But I get you on wanting the exact car.

My car is an early 87 5 spd with LSD & Sport Seats. One of 12 Canadian cars with those specs in 87. If your dad's had LSD and sports seats it could be one of these. If you do find the VIN I can run it in our system to see if it was ever registered or is registered on Ontario.

Catorce, do you need the car to "tick all the boxes" so that the tank sticker reads all the same options, or could you get one that is very close, and have the seats or other/all interior redone? Seems that the latter would be the best option.

You make a good point, Chris. I never thought about redoing the interior. Let me think on that a bit.
Ideally, I would find the actual car. But he sold it in something like 1991 or 1992, so I don't hold much hope for that. I would settle for an 87, 5 speed, Venetian Blue. You are 100% right, I could always recreate the inside..... EXCELLENT point. |
Also I want to add from a motivation standpoint that he used to drive me around in that car when it was nearly new; I was 15 or 16, and I can still remember the smell of the leather. In my life I never got to experience what a new 928 feels like; all the ones I had were substantially used by the time I got them.
It's tough to chase a memory. If i got one like this I would want it bone stock, and I would leave it that way. Oh and Dad is still alive, BTW. |
Glad to be of some help! :-) Either way, good luck with it.
I tried finding my Dad's '54 Buick which was a wee bit more of a common mass produced item, albeit in a strange color combo. Blue and black exterior. Folks on the Buick boards were @zzholes, and ridiculed me for even trying such an "unrealistic" endeavor. I am so happy to see RL immediately try to help a brother out. Kudos to you all! |
