My car is a 1985 ROW Euro S2 4.7 16v model. When i bought the car, it did not have an A/C compressor. It had obviously broken off one of the engine mounting points, been removed and never replaced. I am attaching a pic of a compressor I have just bought which has a short electrical connector wire attached. My question is, where does the live feed come from as no loose wire seems to be present near where the pump will be located. The red a/c button on the centre console does light up when pressed. Could the connection come from the 14 pin connector unit . As you can tell I know nothing about auto electrics. Please advise.
The only wire that is located on the compressor is the solenoid for the clutch. That routes from the a/c relay via the freeze switch and the low pressure switch through to the 14 pin connector and then to the solenoid on the compressor that operates engagement of the clutch to take up load. On my late model 928's it is routed via pin 9 on the 14 pin connector through a 1mm2 black cable.
I like to add a couple cable ties after the electrical connection is complete. Support the intermediate connector shown in the picture, plus gather the compressor-side cable in a small loop, and tie that to the main harness too. It moves the flex/fatigue point from the spade connector end, distributes the flex on a longer section of wire mid-span. It also keeps the wire conveniently out of the way of the belt.
The compressor clutch wire routes from the compressor, where there's a small strain-relief clamp to hold it on top. From there, the wire passes forward and out above the pulley and top bolts so it can't contact the pulley, then proceeds up to join the main front-of-engine harness as shown in the picture.
Murray, there is a wealth of information on this site Nichols
My thanks to you and all the others who have offered advice. One last question please. Do you know which Porsche this hose was made for and could it be used on a 928 compressor to condenser.
That hose is for a 1970-1983 Porsche 911, compressor outlet to rear deck lid condenser inlet; which has a 507 o-ring compressor and standard rear SC style flare condenser.
The switch on the compressor outlet fitting is a binary pressure switch; one lead plugs into the compressor clutch wire and the other lead plugs into the AC power wire by the oil filter.
I see you are listed in Kildare. My cousin Josephine Carbery-Connolly was quite involved with the East of Ireland Championship (golf) back in the day.
