So, on our way out for a jaunt to the river, I pulled the drivers side door latch a little to briskly and snapped it off. Is there a non-plastic alternative or does anyone have one they would not mind parting with?

What snapped is a pot metal part inside the door and costs about $50 or so to replace. There is a nice how-to thread on here that I followed in doing one of mine and it is easy to follow, although the process is pretty fiddly.

Umm is this the inside door handle?
if so just get another one used is fine, and swap it in,
takes about 20 mins

It actually is the L shaped part that your hand actually touches when you release the door latch to open it. Thats what I need and am willing to pay or swap for.

928 537 169 00 70B is what you need and new is $58.
Used would be fine as well as they do not break very often. 35 year old plastic does get brittle.

Does it have the "Do It Yourself" manual transmission, or the superior "Fully Equipped by Porsche" Automatic Transmission?

Tony I would suggest to lubricate the latch linkage a few times with some oil, be generous,
the fact that the handle has broken twice indicates excessive force is being used to operate it,
This could also be caused by improper linkage adjustment
This results in the operator pulling too hard/far on the door handle to open the door
