Stereo head unit upgrade
My car came with the Porsche CD player, which, while being very nice for the time and such, is getting on in years, quality of sound and ease of use. I’ve been thinking about replacing it. I would like to get a CD player/receiver with MP3 playback. Here I’ve encountered a problem many of you have already mentioned – most of the receivers on the market right now are a tad too… uhm… colorful for our cars. I would like to get something with decent sound quality, black, with sound level controlled by a **** and with a minimum of flashing lights.
One player that was recommended to me – Nakamichi CD-500 looks rather nice, but is a bit pricey (nothing too bad) and I could only find it at one on-line retailer so far.
So please, if you’ve had recent experiences buying/installing/listening to an MP3 CD receiver in a 928 – let me know: which player, how you liked it, where was it purchased and for how much. Thank you, all.

I put in a Sony Xplod unit in this past summer. When the unit is off the whole think is black face with two *****. The front panel flips down to allow access to the CD port. When the unit is on at night the colors are blue and red just like the climate control panel.

Personally I wouldn't go with Sony, there stuff isn't that good,
I would go with JVC, panasonic, or clarion, or eve blaupunkt, I have a nice JVC deck, it obviously isn't stock but is very nice and doesn't stand out too much,

I've got one of the newer Alpine CD/receivers (non-MP3) in the GT, and
it looks great. Not too flashy compared to most others out there, has a good old-fashioned **** for volume and other controls. The should have an MP3 model that would be the same.......something like this?

I have an alpine 7949 installed. I modified it to have the green buttons glow red, to match our cars. The unit is very nice, not gimicky. It does not have an analog volume control, but it will control the mp3 cd changer alpine came out with last year. The unit is easily made to match our interior, and it has a copper chassis to reject noise, ans it also has optical output, so you can run the 15ft span of wire to the hatch in glass and not pickup noise from the driveline. Best of all, they are only about 175 used on ebay.

I have a Porsche CR-210 (aka Becker Mexico), which I believe first appeared in the '95 993. IMO these Porsche/Becker head units are the best fit, aesthetically, in the 928. I've hooked up some great components to this unit (amp, CD changer, sub, new speakers) that have altogether made for sound quality that far surpasses my home Bose system. I wonder if it would possible to connect an external MP3 in the same manner you would connect a disc changer?

I installed (ok- I confess- I had it done) an Alpine Casablanca, w/mp3, dvd, nav, etc fit perfectly...
But you'll need more - those stock speakers are getting old and The Crystal Method will just sound like Duran-Duran until you add a decent sub.
soooo, I wound up w/a 10" JL sub & enclosure in the spare tire hole driven by a Fosgate sub amp. then a JL amp for the 4 seperate Diamond Audio component speakers...the Diamonds fit well in back, but in front needed a custom 1/2" spacer to fit w/the sound proof matts in the doors.
the amps went onto the back of the rear seats (1 on each) - all out of sight, and (hopefully) out of thieves hands...total was about $3k, but what a delight!!
the remote that comes with the Alpine is totally useless in such a small car, perhaps my mechanics can use it when the shark is in for service...but the seperate x-over and output for the sub made a huge improvement over my older Alpine...
only the 32V motor sounds better....combined w/the new sound system, both finally can drown out the "how much did you spend this time?" from the other half...if only I could reprogram the wife to respond to the remote....at least the mute...

I bought a JVC head unit from Sound Domain that has MP3 and CD-RW capability as well as an external (front panel) input for an external device (e.g., cassette player - LOL ) for my Father to install in his M-B 420sel. It looks great and isn't too "bling(ey)"for the understated elegance of that old S-class chassis. He loves the unit...particularly the MP3 capability.
Good luck. Now, to deal with replacing all 10 of my aging, dried-out, OEM speakers in the 928s4. What a PITA?!

I installed an Eclipse 5303, with an Eclipse 12 disc changer, an Eclipse sub-woofer and Alpine SPS speakers, and I have been extremely gratified by the results. All the Eclipse products are well made and attractive. I had one problem with the changer, and the manufacturer paid to have it shipped to California, fixed it free of charge, and supplied a free extension of their warranty. Could you ask for better service?

alpine 9815rb
after a lot of deciding i went for the alpine head unit 9815rb. plays mp3 and has the highest RMS output. it also has loads of sound tuning features that really make a difference. ive also upgraded the sp[eakers but needed to make custom enclosure/mountings for these to fit, the speaker upgrade is well worth it. now i really want a sub!
