I like all these console gap widgets!
I lost faith for a bit (after this thread), but now I might make some more of these.
I've been putting my phone IN one of the cup-holders but now I want to stick one of those magnetic phone-holders ON one of the cup-holders.

Weathertech has been advertising the heck out of a phone holder designed to fit inside a cup holder, so you might have the best all around solution.

Slips into the gap. The SS bracket is 1.15 mm thick. It is quite stable, even with two full cups.
My S4 has a ~4mm gap so I used layers of vulcanizing rubber tape to make up the difference.
What I really want here is an excuse to buy a Metabo cordless rivet gun!
