928 Joy

928 Joy
Since I was a kid I have loved Porsche’s I loved the 930’s with their wide bodies, I loved the slant nose cars, and dreamed about the 959 even had a matchbox car of it. Seeing 911’s in movies and how cool the cars were, just made me want a Porsche more.
One of my class mates in school drove a 944 and his dad had a beautiful teal colored 911 turbo. Every time I saw him pull up in his 944 I just thought how cool of a car it was. I maybe have been a little jealous at the time.
Then I saw Joel in Risky Business tearing up the streets in that gold 928. And seeing the rear of the car and how big it looked made me think of a hot girl with a nice butt. Then my Doctor got a purplish 928 with the tag that read DEPO. “He said it was medication”. When I would see him drive it around town I kind of felt honored to be his patient. Seeing the car in real life was like seeing pure grace.
Well when I was 14 going onto 15 I tried and tried, begged and begged my parents to buy me the 80 or 81 944 down the street the guy was selling for something like $5000. I figured I could be like Jake from Sixteen Candles. Needless to say my parents weren’t having it. I can’t complain at all though they got me a gorgeous brand new 1991 Z28.
I’m not a wealthy person, but I do okay. I like to tinker on cars and boats and somewhat mechanically inclined. Well a few years ago I bought a 91 5.0 Mustang LX convertible for my son and I to tinker with. We had our fun tinkering on it and he turned 18 and joined the military, I was a little hesitant to sell the car but my son told me not to hold onto it on his account. So I listed the car on Craigslist. At the bottom of the posting I put may trade for Corvette or Porsche. I thought what the heck mine as well, its not like anyone would want to trade either of those cars for a mustang.
Well a couple weeks later a gentleman called me and asked if I wanted to trade for a 1984 928. I asked what was wrong with the car, he explained the head light stopped popping up and the radio doesn’t work. I asked him why he was willing to trade a Porsche for a Mustang. He said he was a cancer survivor and had a bucket list of cars he wanted to own, and he wanted a convertible mustang. Fair enough. So we met and we drove each-others car and I thought for sure this guy would back out. His Porsche was in a lot better shape than I expected. The gold paint was good no dents, everything worked except the two thing he told me about. Then he says, let’s go to the bank and exchange titles. Um okay.
I have owned the 928 for about two years now, and worked on it replacing things that need replacing and getting the little things that I wanted to be better. And every time I drive the car, or work on it I think I finally own a Porsche. 30 years of admiring and dreaming of a Porsche and I own one.
As I pulled into my driveway tonight after getting off shift and opening the garage door and seeing that big *** on MY 928 it just brings a smile to my face. Even after two years I still like to go out to the garage and look at the car. Sometimes when I get off work at night I like to go for a little cruise in it. Man I really like being a Porsche owner.

Great to hear you finally got one and it has turned out to be ok. I think many here can relate to the boyish admiration of these cars. I often take a peek at my car before going to sleep just to admire the lines, and like you, to feel the amazement of actually owning one. Drive on!

Great story and a VERY nice shark! Gotta hand it to you... that was one helluva deal I had a similar story, except it started in the 70's when my Dad, a Porsche & Audi Salesman (not a Dealer) came home in a 928 he was using for his demo... "WOW!" was all I could think of... what kind of space ship just landed in our driveway? Of course, I couldn't afford one either so many decades later, and well after Joel's adventures in Risky Business, I finally bought my first 928! I'm now on my 3rd Shark, an 84 Euro... and it's Gold... and yes... my name is Joel... go figure. Some things just have a way of working out for the best!! Have fun with the car and drive it like ya stole it!!!

Great story. Now if you want to really enjoy your Porsche, drive it more! Why just take it for an occasional spin after work when you can drive it to work and everywhere else. I drive mine almost everywhere I go between April and December when it's not snowing.
One of the beauties of owning a Porsche is that they are everyday supercars and don't need to be pampered.

Oh believe me I drive it. Driving it to work is kind of a pain. I hate having to put my duty gear on out in the parking lot at the station. I drive it to the gym and running around. I like to drive it to go pick up my daughter. She like when I pick her up in it, she said she would like to have it for her 16th birthday. I’m not to sure on that one.
And i I agree when I put some time behind the wheel and put it through its paces it definitely runs better.
