Carroll Smith has some very useful insight into selecting the shift points for a race car/engine in:
  • Tune to Win, Page 142
  • Drive-to Win, Page 2-45 (actually, everything from page 2-39 and up applies in one way or another)
As always with Carroll Smith, it's excellent. Great books. Highly recommended.

yep, he is correct in his descriptions of shift points.. For some reason, many still don't get this on the racing board. I've plastered photo copies of the pages, yet there is still some resistance that engine torque levels are much harder to use,while HP is "slam dunk" easy to determine shift points.

The easiest way to think of gears, and gear ratios is that they are HP optimizers.
