I am thinking about/planning, kind of, to have one or more of the clean out taps made to re-introduce the lending program that JP and some other of the guys conducted a few years ago that seemed to end with the Tap getting lost in Europe. I am thinking about packaging it similar to how Alan did so it will fit into a Flat Rate Priority Mail Box for shipping and including one or two left hand twist drill bits and an extension and perhaps adapter to have a complete kit needing only a drill motor that will run in reverse.

Before I leap into this I wonder what the current interest or need is for the use of such an animal. I plan to loan it or them out for the cost of mailing with a mere promise of return. I suppose that might also work worldwide.

I don't need it but I think it is a great idea. Too many of those holes need a good clean out, and stranded on the side of the road is not a good time to find out. Along with the clean-out tap, be sure to get the "pacifiers" from Roger, and install in the warmth and dryness of the garage!

CraigL in St. Louis had one of these taps. I borrowed it once. You should reach out to him to see if he still has it. It is probably collecting dust in his garage.

Make sure you get the correct thread pitch - BOTH sizes (15mm or 9/16", 20mm or 0.8" dia) use 8 tpi. Carl's web page still thinks there are fine and course(sic) threads involved , which is wrong for a 928. It may have been true for 911s.

The taps I'm going to order will be made to the correct specs to either re-thread or to clean-out existing threads. I'm pretty sure they will be finished to the 20.318 mm dimention for the female thread rather than the 20 mm diameter of the male thread, found on the tow eye, which comes out to .787 inch. I think the difference in those diameters is the principal feature of this unusual thread given its otherwise ordinary purposes.

Now JP's input has given me cause to reflect about just what the female thread in the 928 might consist of, perhaps rather than a cut thread made to the specs of the female Knuckle thread. In fact I am wondering if it might just be a stamped steel thread made to match the male thread of the Tow Eye, rather than the female thread made to have the clearances of the spec'd thread. If so the tap he made from an original Eye might have been best to clean the threads when in fact a tap made to specs might not even fit in the hole. I'll need to try to figure this one out.
