Default 86.5 Transmission, does it start in 1 or 2 gear?

Ok, this one is making me wonder. Does anyone else own a 86.5 928S, and if so when you press the gas from a standing start, what gear are you in?

In mine it starts in first, does the whump into second, then third, then fourth.

How about everyone else? Maybe my transmission cables are just set up weird.

Chris, the Red Witch started in 1st. She would wind to redline when you put your foot in the water pump and shift her way up to 4th.

I thought on the 4 speed trans start was in 2nd unless floored. I am sure someone with more knowledge will chime in.

To my understanding, 83-86 A28/** transmissions started out in first gear. 87 may or may not, I don't remember. 88+ start out in second gear. I believe that was done as a crutch for fuel economy.

'85 through early '87 all should start in first, although they don't stay there long unless the peddle and load is heavy and or the Kick down switch is closed.

Place selector in 2nd if you want to stay in first off the line, then bump to 3rd to get second, pull back to 2nd to stay there, bump to 3rd when ready.

So do those transmissions not automatically up shift to second? I thought they did but that you had to bump to third in order to prevent over revving?

Hi Nate, I did not say they would not go to second if you manually select first (wasn't the question asked), however they won't up shift with gentile driving they will stay in first, they will/should up-shift to second without moving the selector, but only if pushed hard/ rev limit is nearly reached.

So the trans will stay in first, unless you really push it as in drag racing/ spirited driving peddle to the floor and let it rev, second will or should snap in if all adjusted correctly.

That is why I prefer the Auto for Supercharging/Turbo,(N2O is a different, stick works well but you still loose time), so put in in first, mash it, let it shift to second on its own, then bump to 3rd, by then you are breaking all know speed limits so not recommended on the street.
With a stick you need to back off to shift and when that happens I'm still pulling ahead,

I like to drive my Autos like a stick, only issues is once you are in second, you need to stop or go really slow to get them back into 1st, that's why people install a kick-down by-pass switch.
