Default Mystery - Exhaust manifold heat shield

Hi Rennlisters,

I am almost finished my rebuild project. I am now at the reassembly stage and the final part to install is the exhaust manifold heat shield. For the life of me, I can't seem to remember how it is mounted to the engine. It is one of the simple frustrations of life I suppose. I thought I might turn to the you guys for assistance - perhaps a photo, if one of you has an assembled engine out at the moment.

I have attached a few pictures below to show you my current progress. I thought the manifold wrapping may help to keep the heat down.
The part (manifold heat shield tin) is no. 12 and 13 from the PET diagram attached.

Thanks!

I'd remove the wrap, they do a great job of absorbing oils and I've seen my fair share catch on fire. Great on race cars that are changed often, horrible on street cars. Especially a 928 where they are a PIA to get to once installed.

I've never had any heat issues where I suspected the manifolds were the cause.

Good point from Eric,
instead of the the wrap material,
get the manifolds jet hot coated,
this will reduce the heat put off the manifolds in the engine bay,
and prevent the manifolds from rusting

Thanks for the input guys. Great to have a place to ask a question I will consider removing the wrap. I can see the risk. The cost jet coating may not be worth it on stock manifolds, and I am not sure that I can afford the pretty ones sold by 928 motorsports. Nevertheless, more research is required!

You can see one of them at the bottom-left of this photo under the steering shaft.

That's a pretty painted on coating, you want something that will really make a difference, use Swain Technologies:

Erik, what's your experience with the company? Would they coat headers sent to them?

thanks-Hoi

Absolutely. Here are the headers I had coated for my fathers Ferrari:

Love the engine bay! very clean. Mine could use a new coat of paint. It is 37 years old now after all.

On a slightly unrelated note, do you have any tips to reinstall the engine? I keep catching the sides of oil pan on the engine mounts. The alignment is a very painful process... Is it possible to install the mounts to the engine first and then lower? Or is there some sneaky trick that I could use to ease the frustration?

https://rennlist.com/forums/928-foru...or-mounts.html

Seems I am not the only one who struggles with squeezing the engine past the mounts. I guess it all comes down to technique and patience.

I'm still learning how to search effectively on rennlist. Apologies for the reposting of an age old question!

I have removed the fibre glass wrapping from the manifolds and they have been coated in a heat resistant coating (although only from a can). I realise that this is only so effective for so long when compared with proper ceramic coating (as above).
