Hi everyone,

I've been trying for days to remove the axle nut (in the center of the rim) and it won't budge. I've used my DeWalt impact gun, and a breaker bar. I've literally been stomping on the breaker bar and I'm afraid I'm going to break it... Any advice?

Are you using a 3/4 inch drive breaker bar?

I have a big solid bar from my 3/4 drive set pictured and a custom 3/4 breaker- used the former- see below Remember you are undoing 330 ft lbs or whatever.

In fact, I just did this today.

3/4 breaker bar with a 30-inch steel cheater on the shortest 3/4-inch extension to clear the wheel. Put a thick towel between the car and the bar just in case.

In my case, on the left side, I had to put all toes on the very end of the breaker and give it a little jump.

I like the towel bit- good idea.

I also forgot to mention that I also placed a screw jack raised under the extension bar to give it some counter support.

I do them with a 1:4 torque multiplier, works like a charm.

Good advice above. I like Fred's idea of the screw jack helper.

Dwayne advises standing on a 3' pipe over a breaker bar. About 600'# for for him at 200 lbs body weight, even more for some of us unfortunately.

I'm no Mr Universe, but this was not much effort using:

3/4" breaker
short extension
axle stand at hub for support
handle from trolley jack slipped over breaker for more leverage

To reinstall I didn't have torque wrench going up that far, so measured where to stand on breaker after torquing to point where breaker was at convenient position just above horizontal.

Was it Archimedes who said give me a lever long enough and I can move the world?

I've only needed my 3/4" stuff for this job and crank pulley.

Torque Multiplier works miracles on these and your crank bolt as well ,as it is similar in torque spec. $89.95 e-bay- maybe even amazon do not know. Well worth the money- have used it several times and paid for itself quickly in stress relief.

With the torque multiplier, how easy is to find somewhere to locate the reaction bar thing you act against? What do you do for the crank pulley bolt? Obviously you've found a way to make it work! I looked at these before getting 3/4" bar and sockets for crank and axle

I use a short length of pipe on the end of my torque multiplier when doing the crank bolt. So the end of the pipe just pushes on the ground. Loosens them in a snap.

Thank you all for your helpful comments! The next time a newbie like me has trouble with this, hopefully the search function will unearth this helpful thread!

Matt Kriete came over and used his beefy breaker bar and got it off... I will invest in a 3/4 inch breaker bar which should do the trick next time.
