Question What Camshafts are these?

I've picked up my new heads, but before parting with them the seller decided he wanted me to return the camshafts at a later date as it appeared they might be GT cams.

I've compared one of them with an exhaust camshaft from my car, but the lobe profile appears to be identical. I only have one of the cams off my car to hand but the part numbers are as follows. Can anyone tell me what they are?

928 105 271 0R - 271 01
928 105 272 0R - 272 01
928 105 273 0R - 273 01
928 105 274 0R - 274 01

928 105 294 4R - 294 08
Don't have the rest with me but think they are 291, 292, 293

I'm assuming mine are more recent, they are certainly in much better condition, the 270s have pitting on the lobes.

Thanks

Thanks Steve, but I'm getting conflicting info from other sources - can anyone give me a definitive answer on these cams?

928 105 273 0R - 273 01

Steve
Your info is not quite correct, it just needs expanding
#294,291,292,293 are 1987 cars
these No.s are also used on the '85/'86 32v cams AND the '88 CS / SE cams (which are the same specs. as the GT cams)

Paul, Steve
There are 2 'P/N's' on cams.
The first is the casting one along the camshaft (between the lobes) its the one that most quote, but is a casting P/N, NOT a parts P/N.eg.928 105 291.
STAMPED on the rear end face in tiny No.s is the TRUE I.D. P/N. eg. 291.09
Its the last two No.s that are important

The CASTING No. 928 105 291 is used on 3 DIFFERENT cams.
Its the No. on the end face that differenciats them.
'85/'86 32v is 291.04
'87 S4 32v is 291.09
'88 SE/CS is 291.06
The '88> S4's & '89> GT's & '92> GTS's ALL use the SAME casting No. The end face No.s being
S4 271.00
GT 271.01
GTS 271.03
The above examples are for only 1 cam out of the 4 on the engine, but the same aplies to the other 3
I hope this helps.

All this info is in the small tech. spec. books & on Jim Morehouse's CD's (well worth getting)

Thanks Martin

The final digits on mine are 08 rather than 09, but it is an early S4 - does that make sense? I need to check the Vin, is there such a thing as an MY86 S4?

As soon as I get hold of a pair of calipers I'm going to messure the lobes and compare them, because the 274 GT exhaust cam when placed side by side to the 294 S4 cam appears identical.

Cheers!

Paul
Yes the left Exhaust cam (our RHD pass. side) is .08 & the other 3 are .09 !

They started making S4's in Sep. '86 but it is still a '87 MY (model year), your vin. year will be******HS*****

Eventually I got round to measuring the Exhaust cams:

294 measured min 34mm max 42mm - lift 8mm
274 measured min 34mm max 43mm - lift 9mm

The GT cams have been returned...
