87 S4 Mystery Shroud "hole"
Recently replaced a fan motor and when the shroud was out we noticed this square shaped hole. Any idea why someone would do this?
Thanks,

They wanted to decrease the efficacy of the fans? Or they hated the cupholder feature?

The owner who did that probably removed the air pump- correct? Maybe the air filter holder was damaged and he wanted to "tidy things up"- who really knows?
Bottom line, a hole like that will allow some degree of air re-circulation to occur at lower speeds- not disastrous but not useful either. At speed it might help the air blast effect.
My SPAL fan shroud has a number of such windows but they have a rubber flap on the back such that if air re-circulation occurs the flap closes the flow path like a check valve type of thing.

Some folks get pretty upset with environmental regulations. The air pump filter housing might have been a constant irritant. It had to be eliminated, with extreme prejudice. A six-pack of Milwaukee Light might have been involved.
Proper Porsche elitist behavior allows the removal of the air pump and plumbing, only, under the influence of full-bodied German ale.
