Default Late 944 fuel rail n early car ('84)

Hey troops,

My '84 is spraying fuel all over my engine bay..... In the fuel rail, the leak is just to the right of the #3 injector, before the bracket..... Are there any issue using a late car Fuel rail in an early car... They are like 49.95 on eBay, but $150 for the ones for an early car. The S2 and non turbo models.... Should fit.... But I am not certain..... Seems like a "used one" is the way to go for a (haha) inexpensive 944 car.......

Thanks!
Fred

Early and late are different and I'd be cautious with a used one being as it will be as ancient as the one that just failed on your car. They leak at the joints and split at the bends due to fatigue from vibration so it's a roll of the dice how long a used one will last. Personally I don't like gambling with fuel leaks.

It will not plug into the existing fuel lines without custom work, due to the damper being at the front of the rail on the late version rather than the rear. You need to basically make an extension using BAT globe fittings and some AN hose. I know that because that's what my '83 needed to run a late rail - it was done by the PO for some reason. IMO much easier to source an early fuel rail, and will end up being cheaper after you price out the metric globe seal fittings you would need.

odonnel, you sure the fittings are actually metric thread and not BSP?
BSP is the international standard for threaded fittings outside of US/Canada.
for example, the Setrab oil coolers I have on my 944 were fitted to Volvos with 1/2 BSP fittings.

You guys are the Best!!! Thanks much for your help!

I may be in for a rough road.... Did a quick search, and have not had much luck finding An new early fuel rail.... There is one on EBay.... But kinda pricy for used....

Rather then try a half-assed adapter for a late fuel rail.... I wonder if a repair is possible? I suspect the leak is where the bracket meets the fuel rail.... Seems to me it could be brazed or maybe silver soldered....

But perhaps I don't have a clue what I am talking about!

Thanks!
Fred

I'm confident that they're metric, M14x1.5 globe seal to be exact. The damper uses the same thread as the jumper line you see on late fuel rails.

Hi,
For whatever reason it is more common that the late rails crack and leak than the early rails.

You would be OK finding a good-condition used early rail from ebay or wherever.

Check with this guy, Tim..
He has a literal stack of fuel rails in the corner of his shop.

Fun fact...on the top header picture of his website, that's my car, 3rd in from the right...
