The new GT does have some pretty good looks and some pretty sophisticated engineering underneath that for the suspension and chassis. It's an exotic looking car which IS something that Ford hasn't had for a long time. Dodge has the Viper which is known to turn lots of heads, but GM is out here as the Corvette is about as common as grass is around here (either kind, I hear weed is TN's #1 cash crop....lol..sheesh).

As for other makes, my parents have 2 1995 Nissan Maximas and with under 150k miles and having done the recommended service to both cars, both are now eating up the $$$. A/C just went totally out on one, power steering on the other, back and forth between them they are are BOTH just as bad now as the US made cars they had before. Neither are hotrodded or hard at all. Mostly highway driving for both in fact. Maybe Honda is better or perhaps Toyota, but I don't see Nissan up that high. Heck, you should hear the rear brakes on my dad's car, sound like they are about to fall off the car and that was with all factory parts. Honestly, I think I'll stick with Porsche....they have their problems, sure...but as has been said many times, at the end of the day, look at what you're driving and ask yourself if you're really satisfied.

I also read an article in USA Today a few months back that the next big trend in Auto's in the US:

"Ugly Sells"

The article was pointing out that people want something different to the point they will buy something they think is ugly:

Pontiac Aztec (yes, I know it been dropped by GM)
Chebby Avalanche
Toyota Rubics Cube (whatever that little box is called)
PT Cruiser
Pontiac Vibe
To some extent the new BMW 5 & 7 series
the "rice" trend

ive had my aurora for almost two years and no mechanical problems. had my pos legend coupe for 5 years and no mechanical problems. had my 944 three years and only 15k was spent on maintenance.

back in the day when the 944 was new I had a new rx7, my buddy had a new 280zx, his dad had a new 944 and my dad had a new astro.

my dad changed the oil the least often, and generally didnt give a crap about the car. after about five years, the porsche cost the most to maintain, and the astro the least. so much for german cars being so much better. oh, and the friend we sold the astro to when it was rear ended with 106k drove it another 100k before selling it to a friend of his. that van is probably still on the road. it went over 200k, and the motor was never opened up.

yep, american cars are crap. you sold me.

Exactly Tom. American cars are great. We have a 91 Chevy Caprice SW with over 200k miles and the only thing we've had to put on it are brakes and change the oil. My Pontiac Bonneville was the most reliable car I've ever encountered. It was easy to work on and I could rewire that whole car in an hour. I'll attribute it's smooth running to the amazing GM 3800 Series 1 engine. I don't like foreign cars because of the cost of parts. Also, the fact that Shade Tree Mechanic Jim out in the middle of BF Egypt can work on the car if something serious goes wrong. A lot of guys won't even touch the Porsche. When I first got the car, I was looking for someone to replace the master and slave cylinder and only 2 mechanics in my area would touch the car. Plus, who the hell wants to pay a specialist $75/hr on up to work on their cars? Billy Bob down the street is happy to get 20/hr to work on Domestics. Go figure eh?

Problem with these conversations is you can find any one who knows someone or who had a type of car (name a country) that was awesome. I even have a friend on his 2nd Kia, he loves them, no problem what so ever.

My dad had a Ford Aerostar with over 300,000 miles. Hit one deer, hit by one semi on the side, engine never touched. 3 transmissions though, he had a habbit of towing way more than the car was rated for. Sold it for a few hundred bucks, its still on the road.
My 1986 Audi Coupe. GF cracked the head at 120,000 miles (she over heated it) slapped on a used head sold the car for $1k. It's still running with over 150k
My 1983 MB 380SEC, only major repair=water pump until the timing chain jumped a gear at 205,000 miles, now it sits with broken valves.
2000 Beetle. 80,000 miles & 6 Oxygen sensors
My 1991 Caddy 205,000 miles. Engine is 100% original.

944 & 928? Don't even ask. I've put less than 30k miles on each in 10 years. Their repair bills are higher then the rest of the cars on this list combined. Oh well.

I wasnt saying any car was awesome or not. just tired of reading the rants of ignorant cheerleaders.

I called my mechanic last week to see how he was doing. he said he was going to call me too. it was almost two months since i saw him. a record since i bought the porsche. in fact, before i bought the porsche i was just a good customer. when i had the porsche we became good friends.

i wonder how my owning a chevy now will affect our friendship?

hey porschepile,
whey does the brand porsche have the word "poor" in it?

My father has a 88' Ford Ranger with ~275k miles on it. It has only gone through the normal repairs, battery/clutch/oil/tires/belts but it still runs strong and with all original parts on it. Im sure my father will pass 300k and keep going.

Ford GT looks cool. but outa my price range.

That is one great looking car. I like the way Ford is going with the GT-40 and the 2005 Mustang. I think after making ****ty cars for such a long period of time they are realizing that people aren't going to accept that quality of cars anymore especially with the growing foreign market. It would be nice to see a domestic car manufacturer come out with some innovative designs. This could be the start of something good!
