Default Need Help Identifying Brake Calipers

Greetings Rennlist Brain Trust,

I just purchased a 1988 951 and the PO, whose son actually owned the car for the majority of the time it was in their family, said it has "928 GT4 brakes." I want to flush the brake fluid and would like to add Speedbleeders and stainless steel lines, since the shop that did some post-purchase work for me said the stock lines were cracking.

Can someone identify these calipers for me? They have two bleeder screws each and on the back side they say Brembo, and they're certainly bigger than the calipers on my 86 Carrera so are these Brembo Big Reds? I can take more pics if necessary.

If so, any advice or links to brake pads, rebuild kits, and stainless steel lines would be greatly appreciated since I can't just order the stock replacement parts for my vehicle.

Jeff

the top picture is a standard 944 turbo brake caliper.
the bottom picture is a big red or big black (red was on the 911 turbo, black was on the 928 GTS).

i would think the same stainless brake line kits (try rennbay, paragon products, or lindsey racing) would still fit assuming the big reds used the same fitting at the caliper.

Thanks, Spencer! The top picture is the rear caliper and the bottom picture is the front caliper.

I'm not too lazy to search, but if anyone knows if these non-matching calipers use that same brake lines that would be great. Paragon's stainless brake lines say there's one part number for calipers in which the rubber line connects directly to the calipers (which my front brake lines, the one that are attached to Big Red calipers, seem to) and another part number if the rubber line connects to a hard line that then connects to the calipers (which my rear brake lines, the ones that are attached to the Turbo calipers, seem to).

Can anyone whose familiar with both types of calipers provide any input on the compatability of the brake lines? Thanks in advance.

Jeff

Spencer, how do you know it's big red/black, not 951S caliper?

few things (based on visual approximation):
1) length of the caliper body relative to the bleeder port, big reds are longer here than medium blacks
2) all the medium black S4/944 M030 calipers i've seen have had raised Porsche lettering in a more square font than the newer style font "sticker"
3) medium blacks have a more straight line casting across the pistons where big reds have a slight curve (the part where the Porsche lettering is applied)
4) they are red

like i said, this is based on the photo so i might be wrong.
some measurements of the caliper would help..

Good points, I'm looking to buy big blacks but I want to make shure before paying, they really are big blacks

#1 really appears to be good visual check.
#2 I've seen machined mediums to later look.

I can at least attest to #2 (mine are of the unmachined variety).

"GT4" huh... that must be the shorthand for "GTS fronts + S4 rears"

RacingBrake has a complete list of Porsche calipers with pictures. Easy to identify and order the rebuilding components.
