Default Rebuilding Turbo - K27/6 vs. K26/8

Getting my turbo rebuilt. I read about 50 posts on the subject but haven't gotten a clear answer. I have a Stage II GURU MAP. Basically I want the best bang for the buck - pretty fast spool, strong boost to redline. Im wondering how the K27/6 will do with high altitude and how laggy the K26/8 is compared to the K27/6. I have about $550 or so to spend and need to keep it fairly bolt-on. Just for kicks, how much does a K27/8 run? Obviously nothing from a K26/6 can be used for a K27/8 so I assume it would be more expensive than going KKK/Garrett hybrid?

Thanks

Chris,

I can't really say anything about the k27, since I don't have any experience with them. But...since I'm at 7200 ft, I was also real concerned about spool up as well.

I don't know if this will help, but here is what I did:

I got a junk k26/6 for the price of shipping and sent the hotside off to Majestic Turbo (good work - bad paperwork side of the house, but stands behind their mistakes and takes care of problems). I then had them build me a TO4E with a 46 trim compressor wheel and had the #6 hotside machined out for a stage 3 turbine wheel. Total price $720 delivered. If you don't have a hotside call majestic and talk to kevin and see if he can work with you.

If your 26/6 is still good, you should be able to sell it to help offset the difference.

All I can say is I love how this turbo came out. I can get about 15lbs of gauge pressure by about 3~3200 rpms and it pulls strong to redline. In one of the other posts on the turbo board, another member had an equivalent turbo from TEC and was able to lay down something like 307RWHP at 15psig in Denver. Thats like running 12~13lbs at sea level! This will also be running your injectors to the max with a 3 bar regulator.

Anyway, it's something to think about and completly different than what you asked for.

Thanks Rob-
Great advice! That's not what asked, but it is what I wanted. Do you have any problems with the TO4E and oil? That was my main concern with going with Garrett. My K26 is still good, but if I sell it will Majestic charge me more?

Anyone on the K27?

Also, with a #8 wheel, would the MAP and freeflowing exhaust make the lag less? Like the stock K26/6?

I have a K27/8 on my 968 turbo and its a great match for my car, quick spool up and nice top end but remember thats 20% more displacement. I would suggest you stick to K27/6, it will keep your lag similar but give you more up top. A K27/8 will be laggy and you will not like it cause you are used to a K26/6 spoolup.

After reading Maximum boost and seeing the oil requirment of a modern turbo, I went with a restrictor right away with mine. While I don't have any problems, I might swap it out with an even smaller restrictor. I currently have with a .080 dia. and might jump down to a .060 dia., because I am using slightly more oil than previous and others are running as small as .050 dia.

As for cost of not supplying the #6 housing, all I can say is, give him a call. He is pretty easy to work with and may have a #6 housing to sell for cheap.

I've been leaning towards the K27/6. Thanks for the insight guys. I was hoping others with these types of turbos would add a little - but seems like I can't go wrong with Magestic or TEC etc... I'll be calling about 4 companies tomorrow to check prices and options.

Just talked to Majestic - they quoted me $775 for TO4E with a 46 trim compressor wheel and had the #6 hotside machined out for a stage 3 turbine wheel. That sounds like the best idea. I just hope I won't have oil issues. Where does the restrictor go? (More specific than the oil inlet to the turbo ) Just curious.

Chris, check this thread (on the turbo forum) ... TonyG has something you might be able to use for sale, plus it looks like the price range matches... you could then sell the old K26/6 to recover some of the cost

Thanks Sami! I almost overlooked his turbo - the first time I replied, I was shopping without a credit card. :P

I'm really having a tough time with this decision still. Mark Szalaiy has the T04B Kokeln turbo and said the B compressor wheels can make more hp than the E's. That seems like it would be like a better time installing it but seems contradictory to what I've always thought and found here on the site. The larger compressor wheel was the reason for wanting to go with the K27/6... Has anyone had experience with both the K27/6 and the T04E with a 46 trim compressor wheel and had the #6 hotside machined out for a stage 3 turbine wheel? Is it worth $250 extra?
