Guys, -what is the function of the tear-drop shaped device just before the rear torsion bar housing in the exhaust stream? 1990 944 S2 Cabrio. -What will change if it is removed ? -What is it's internal design ? Thanks.

it's a resonator or pre-muffler as you say, believe it was only fitted to the 944S and S2 cars, perhaps some unwanted exhaust noise from the 16v engine design warranted cancellation?

removal may make your car a little louder or you might hear a new sound at a particular rpm - but it wont have any performance or reliability effects.
