SM, I am going to use a piston ring compressor, a block of wood, and a rubber mallet.

Good luck

Christian, no the engine is goes in, in a few weeks. I plan on taking it all out starting Nov 22nd weekend. My motor will go into a 968 cab and the turbo RS motor will go into my car.
I appreciate your offer, only problem is that all work will take place in MA, not sure if you want to take the hike.

Do you plan on pushing the rear main seal all the way in or just flush with the surface?

I heard pushing it all the way in is the correct way - is that right?

Christian, as always reliability is my first priority with driveability my 2nd. All out HP/torque numbers are of no use if the car becomes unbearable to drive. I have set targets of 375rwhp/torque at no more than 14.5psi. I initially wanted to get 400rwhp but realized how nice my car drives on a daily basis and I don't want to lose that. If I don't make 375 and only make 350, thats is fine as well. As long as its fun to drive around town.
I will let you know further details.

968TurboS, where in NJ are you located? It would be awesome if I could see the finished product sometime. I'm in central Jersey, a couple towns over from Christian.

I am very close to princeton. I currently have a finished product. Just making a few changes. I will have it for the get together next weekend, maybe you can join us. Christian has seen it before and Adrial has sat in it.

SM, I quote the service manual "Place the seal in place in the cavity and tap it eenly into the bore until the outer edge is flush with the block surface."

"After the seal is in place tap it with a rubber mallet to make sure it is flush."

Set the seal at a different depth than it was before. Chances are that you will have a small ridge where the seal was riding on the crank. You'll want to set it deeper than that, so you have a fresh area for the seal to ride on.

Christian,
Could you shoot and post a pic of the main bearing carrier? This is the large thing the holds crank down. I would like to see the mating surface to the block to look at the oil passages.

Thanks!

Get a small flat blade or a pic and pry it out of there. You can chew up the seal, it does not matter, but do not scratch or score any of the mating surfaces.
