Default MORE Engine dissasembly pics! HorAy!

Well this is a pic of a bad Rear main seal

Engine on stand with oil pan

And here is the oil pan removed exposing the crank and rods.

Tomorrow I plan on removing the crank, rods, and pistons. Wish me luck!

However I plan on disonecting the connecting rods from the crank, and pushing the piston out the bottom with the rods, which I guess in reality is the top.

You get them baggies and bins yet? Don't forget to note the direction of the rods with the stamped #'s, and also their location. You don't want the #4 rod on #1 journal.. keep them as they are.

Perry951, believe it or not I did get the baggies. After I read your first post I went to the grocery store, bought a box of zip lock bags and the special markers used to write on the plastic. Everything is nice and neat now. I stripped several of the pressure plate bolts so thoes will have to be replaced. Other than that things are going A-Okay.

Great pics.

Just out of interest, how do you replace the rear main seal? Do you actually need the special tools or is there another way?

If you will notice the bottom of the first pic, there is a groove where you can insert a pic or screw driver to pop the seal out.

Raj, thanks for the kind words. Do you have that RARE 968 turbo engine yet? If you dont have the engine in yet I would die to come and help put it in!

Christian,

Cool pics and good luck with the job. Can I ask how you plan on putting the new rear main seal on? I'll be replacing mine this weekend, and haven't really come up with a surefire way to install the main seal correctly.

Any tips?

FYI:

As previously posted by Bill -

"I spent about an hour in the Vicks plumbing section and finally found a tool to drive in the rear seal. I don't know about anyone else, but all my sockets and bearing driver tools were too small for the job.
It turned out that a 4" PVC cap is just a little smaller then the seals OD and is also a little narrower then the seals ID. I also filed off the threads to get a better grip on it. The main seal is with the PVC cap in the pictures.
