Default 944S2 in SF - advice

At "Cars Dawydiak" which appears to be a real great porsche shop, there is a nice 944S2. Does anyone know the car or have any advice? Im totally new at this, but it would be my childhood dream to pick one up for the weekend driving.
I live in the midwest so i cant go over to look at it, and prices seem all over the place.

Without seeing the car other than the add it looks to be a great example and the pricing on it and all the other Porsche cars they are selling seems to be in line. The S2 is one of my favorite 944 and the mileage is nothing for this car. Im sure someone in the area could have a look at it for you

Looks good at that price with only 93K miles, and appears to be unmodified from photos. As long as it's not too far behind on the usual maintenance (timing belt, water pump, etc) and it's not leaking fluids. You should stop by and take a look at the options code sticker and see if there's anything interesting (030, 220, 474 etc). These are solid cars. I loved mine.

They are asking top dollar. You need to see service records. When was the t-belt, water pump, last changed. Are the motor mounts original? Rear wheel bearings changed? Does the odometer work properly. The gears often break. Does the sunroof open and close? Any collision history? Those are some of the basics. The cars are great, and make great daily drivers but they do need to be maintained.

I've bought p-cars from Dawydiak before; the owner is a really nice and knowledgable guy, and they have an impressive show room and maintenance department. The last time I bought from them, they were very accommodating in helping me get a PPI from another shop - spend the $250 to get it checked out, and if it's as clean as it looks, I'd say that price is fair. It looks like it even has the original Blaupunkt and cassette holders.

Nice looking car. Probably been tracked some, guessing by the upper shock mounts, hi-per replacements along with the uninstalled strut bar laying on top of them. Prices seem to have risen some since I bought my well sorted 79xxx mile 89 S2 nearly 4 years ago for 9 grand.

For that price it really needs to have all the critical maintenance up to speed, no body repair and records.
Nice looking car. Love mine too.

It looks like a very clean S2, and that price seems in the ballpark for a top-condition northern California car (great weather here).

I'd be happy to check it out for you next week--PM if you'd like to arrange it. I live right across the Bay and have an oddly similar S2 (black/black '89 w/ ~93k, rear wiper), though as previously mentioned we don't know the options list on this one. Mine has the LSD and sport Konis (220 & 474) and European H4 headlights, all of which I recommend.

No equalizer, no sport seats means probably no 220 or 474. No close up of drivers bolster that looks tired. Nice and shiny paint, but they didn't clean the gas cap area.

i really want to buy it, but i have no way to go out and test drive, etc.
i dont mind the price, i just want something that i dont have to fix at the outset.
the tracking part worries me that someone wrote, because i have no way to know if that affects value
I guess i could trust the dealer, but dont know how to do this well.

I knew my S2 had been tracked some, the PO said so in the ad, I didn't worry about that as services were up to date and the clutch replaced. That is a biggie $$$ wise. Also check for cam tensioner pad replacement, it needs it with that mileage. If it has no oil leaks, the clutch has been done along with the brakes, tensioner pad and the belts/water pump up to date you should have 3 years and 15-20 thousand miles of driving without major engine or clutch expense. At the end of this time you will need belts/water pump service. This based on my S2 experience. You could buy a cheaper car and easily exceed this one's cost by it needing thousands in service. I believe for every dollar extra you spend to buy a good car will save you 2 dollars that need to be spent on an average car. Always try to chisel the price down price and flash cash. I don't know what to tell you to you to pay, if you like the car you set your price. Remember, your mileage may vary

When I sold my third S2 back in 08 or 09 that car was not even a $10,000 car. The market has changed. The cars issues haven't.

If the shocks are original, budget about $1,000 for a set of Koni yellows. Then there is the tensioner pad, not expensive, but time consuming. I would like to see what it looks like under the battery.

Chances are the speakers dried out. Not major, but a PITA. If you buy that car for that price, expect to have low 20s in it before you are done.
Edit:
When I told my wife what they were asking for S2s, she asked what a Cayman is going for? I pulled a few up on autotrader and craigslist. Bottom line, you can get a car 15+ years newer with less miles, 87 more HP, a better sound system, etc. for about what you will have into this S2. Maybe rethink your dreams.

She also liked one on craigslist and suggested I look into it. I may put my M Roadster out there since I DD and DE the 128i and DE the half of a 944S I own.

Definitely need to see records for the chain tensioner pads along with new engine bay fuel lines ($400 for parts) -- the latter are the #1 cause of fires in our cars. I'd want to see records of a clutch at this mileage too, otherwise plan on that job relatively soon if the car has lived around hilly San Francisco/Marin -- it's about $3,000 at a reputable shop.

The price is basically full-blown retail -- maybe 20% higher than you'd expect from a realistic private party. But buying from a dealer, that's what you'd expect. These engines are good for well over 200k miles when they're well taken care of.

My 128k-mile car is current on service except for motor mounts, has records from new, and I'd let it go for far less than this, to put things in perspective.
