Default rear wheel spacer on early car

So I have an 84 car with the manhole covers in the rear 8x16 et23. I also have 21 mm factory spacers. All the threads Ive read are guys that are putting on H&R style hubcentric spacers for late offset wheels. I know that my wheels are not stock - 7x16 in the front and 8x16 in the rear. In the back, I have around 50mm of clearance from the tire sidewall to inner fender lip. I was thinking that an additional 25mm would look good. Is it true that the stock wheels were ET11? If so, then my thoughts of an additional 25mm may be too much.

Anyone venture into spacers with ET23 wheels? Seems like there are a ton of threads with ET5X something wheels since they were the later standard.

FYI, I put 5mm spacers on the front to clear the strut when running 225/50s in the front on 16x7 rims. They have about 25mm clearance from the wheel well to the sidewall.

If you have around 50mm of clearance, then a 25mm spacer will be fine.

The originals on this car would of been the 15" cookie Cutter style all 7J & ET23, not ET11.

If your flat faced "Gullydeckel" wheels are from the 928 they will be front 7J ET65 & rear 8J ET52.3

This is why they all sit inboard by a mile, Ideally if you want a set of wheels to sit more flush with the fender you need to change them otherwise if you really like and want to keep the flat wheels you'll have to fit 4 hefty sized spacers and I the Steering will also become heavier if you have a Manual rack?

Seems a little odd that an owner would take off an Optional equipped correct fit & offset 15" Fuchs Windmill wheel set, and replace them with 928 Flat style 16" wheels, that didn't fit or look right ?

but stranger things have happened!

I think only 15" Fuchs were available as a special order on an 1984 car? and 16" were available from 1986 on the Turbo 7" & 8" both ET23

Unfortunately, I do not know what was original wheel - there is no documentation or pics. The option code label in the back doesnt mention anything about wheels. I have the wheel below (stolen from another thread). I dont think they are gullydeckel. I read the stamping on the wheel ET23. Its hard for me to believe that the stock wheels fit so far inside the fender.

if you have an 8" ET23 wheel in the rear it is sitting 12mm further inboard than it should be.
proper fitment of an 8" rear wheel on early (82-85.0) 944 is ET11 with the stock 21mm spacer on the hub.

the 928 that those wheels came from had totally different offset requirements to fit its fenders.

This site has a convenient comparison tool for different fire hand wheel sizes.

The na Fuchs amounted to 3/4 the value of the car a few years ago, sellers would remove and sell separately.

I think only 15" Fuchs were available as a special order on an 1984 car? and 16" were available from 1986 on the Turbo 7" & 8" both ET23

15" Fuchs were optional equipment on na's for MY82-86. 7" ET23 front/8" ET11 rear.
16" Fuchs were optional equipment on turbos for MY86 only. 7" ET23 front/8" ET23 rear.

To the op, why don't you just fit a spacer to bring the rear out? A 1" spacer should be sufficient and it's reasonably easy to do. You will most likely need to remove the emergency brake linings to get clearance to fit the longer studs but it's not a difficult task.

Thanks for the information guys. Im going to try the 1" H&R style spacer on the rears. I think it will look much better (to my eyes at least).

The spacers are installed - very happy with the result. Tomorrow test ride to insure no fender rub will be last test. Before
AFTER!

Spencer: Thanks for the note. Still sitting on the bench. I was waiting to install after this weekends autocross at the Q. I didnt want to wrench on it last minute. Ive been busy with tires, alignments and offsets. I expect to add the compressor after this weekend. Good hearing from you.
