Default Radiator Fan

My primary radiator fan sounds like it may be going in that it sounds like a bad bearing in the motor (?). Question the fan has 3 blades and in looking up replacements I see some advertised with 6 blades, which is correct? I am assuming the 3 is correct, but is the 6 blades quieter or is there no difference, again assuming the 3 blades are actually correct for a early 1985 944.

6 blade fan flows more air and is quieter than the 3 blade fan.
You can swap the fan blades by themselves or the whole fan assembly, it is all interchangeable.

However, on an early model 944 you will need to be careful as some of the lower radiator hoses in production bring the hose too close to the fans - the 6-blade fan will rub this hose, eventually causing a leak.

You CANNOT simply use a late model 944 hose as it is too long to fit between the early car's lower radiator port and water pump...just found this out a few weeks ago.

The Genuine Porsche early hose is supposed to fit, or you can do what most of us do and just trim the edges of the passenger side fan blades so that they don't contact the hose.

I replaced my original 3 blade fan unit with the later 6 blade assembly a while back. What a difference! It's a lot quieter and more efficient in cooling the radiator down. You have to be a little creative with the original connectors as the newer connections are at 90 degrees.

Interestingly, not all of them are like that.
I just got a 3-blade setup from a friend that has the plugs lying flat on the motor case like the 6-blade style rather than "front to back" like earlier ones...I would guess the 90-degree-sticking-out ones are 82/83 production?

Thanks for the response, after doing some more research on the forum I found a thread by "yorkee" that outlined how to make the change and confirmed the 6 blade are better than the 3 blade. The 3 blade sounds like you have a jet engine in the front of your car, only wish it was true.

The conversion on my '83 from 3-blade to 6-blade was plug and play. No connector or hose issues.
